    England in New Zealand 28 Nov-18 Dec 2024 - 3 Tests

This was worth a one-off in India maybe, but not at home and not a longer term solution. Blundell will eventually be replaced but by a proper keeper.

Don't see the point of taking Foxcroft along and not giving him a game. Could have replaced either Robinson or Nicholls in the lineup at least once. Though Nicholls has played pretty well today.

Seeing how well Santner’s been bowling (admittedly on helpful surfaces) in Sri Lanka, he’s definitely worth a shot against the Bazballers. I suppose Henry, Southee, O’Rourke are a lock in for now with Santner and Smith vying for that 4th bowling spot.

His first 5 overs were rubbish but next 4 were surprisingly consistent and threatening. Landed his legbreak on the same spot for the most part and beat the RHs outside edge a number of times. Legit one of the best mini-spells I’ve seen him bowl. Another day would’ve had a few wickets.

Yeah very happy for SL given it’s been a tough few years. Proving very hard to beat at home once again.

A very fun game to watch and a reminder that ODIs can still be absorbing (when the bowlers get a look-in). Sadly very much the exception these days.

That Smith over has pretty much ensured this won’t go to the 47th. NZ to bowl out SL if they are to win this. Good effort from Kushal, been hobbling but gutsed it out there. Contrasting effort to Chapman’s.

    N. Smith the bowler reminds me a bit of Lance Klusener. Good use of the short ball to dismiss Liyanage.

Poor effort from Nicholls, looked short of scoring options. In the first game he was thrust into a situation he’s not suited to, but here should have really taken on the senior player responsibility.

Would have also played Milne having flown him down. Santner aside the spinners don’t have an especially high ceiling if it’s not turning square, and these are not Duffy and Smith’s ideal conditions.

Just remembered Southee’s debut was also Stephen Fleming’s final test. That’s quite a decisive last link.

New Zealand doom and gloom thread

https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/rangana-herath-on-new-zealand-s-spin-triumph-in-india-it-was-all-about-accuracy-1459402 Nice interview with Rangana Herath on how he worked with the spin attack in India. NZ employing him paid off quite handsomely you’d have to say. Can remember Vaas working...

There’s definitely a noticeable dropoff in quality from what we’re used to seeing. This format especially isn’t kind to teams with unreliable or makeshift spinners (don’t know why Santner insisted on bowling them through, though he must have wanted to prevent Smith from being completely in the...

Looking too comfortable out there for SL. The absence of a Ferguson/Milne in the middle overs can be a problem. Golden arm Phillips will come on at some point I imagine.

Very tough for NZ having to chase with this lineup in spin friendly conditions.

    England in New Zealand 28 Nov-18 Dec 2024 - 3 Tests

I honestly don’t mind Blundell continuing for the time being, if he finds is mojo back in familiar conditions he’s still a good enough contributor. NZ can utilise white ball games to identify their preferred replacement (though would be typical if Latham took the gloves there). With so many...

Wish Chapman would finally score some runs against a team that’s not Pakistan. Really hasn’t made enough of his opportunities in white-ball now that he’s a permanent fixture. Having said that, no.3 is not his ideal position.

    England in New Zealand 28 Nov-18 Dec 2024 - 3 Tests

Also in his strange test career so far, he’s tended to do better in conditions that somewhat more subcontinent-like (aside from the obvious India example, he scored two half centuries in the test which Bangladesh won at the Mount). Otherwise there are a lot of low scores in there, TBF most of...

Yeah, not a flawless keeping performance but was a livewire behind the stumps and looked like he enjoyed being out there. Some runs in the ODIs would be great too.

Yeah, the gameplan should be to go back to batting wickets which play well for 3 days then turn on days 4, 5. 3-4 years of these pitches has dented the confidence of the batters.
