Can't believe you guys slate Smith and AB when they are substantially responsible for taking you to #1 in the world. Your record, especially away from home is the envy of all other supporters.

Amen to all this. Fabulous match - feel privileged to have watched at least some of it.

The Jan 19 date was not relevant. The key date was Nov 18 - if the tour had been allowed to start on Nov 18 as scheduled, there was more than enough time to play 3 tests. If for whatever reason, India wanted to return home earlier than Jan 19, they could have cut out a couple of ODIs or T20s...

"India named a shockingly large touring party for their shortened safari tour of South Africa, picking a 16 man ODI and 17 man test squad for a series that includes just 3 ODIs and 2 tests matches, after being chopped down controversially to accommodate a Sachin Tendulkar retirement series"...

The original tour itinerary started on Nov 18 which was perfectly feasible until the BCCI organized the West Indies series. There would have been more than 2 months - ample time to fit in 3 tests.

They basically killed two birds with one stone.

I think the tracked eased out once the green of the first two days had gone and our bowlers ultimately didn't have the ability to get it done. On Kallis, he did get a shocker, but to be fair, there was a very close shout that Shami had against FAF just before lunch that Hawk Eye showed hitting.

Very well said. Only thing is FAF was no longer at the crease and if Philander got out at the death, Smith was concerned that 2 or 3 balls could finish it.

Agree with this - in fact the batting was unbelievable given they didn't have 1 ball of first class cricket before the test. All I'm saying is given their position at the end of day 3 and 4, a draw was a terrific achievement for South Africa, on par with their Adelaide miracle last year. I...

Saffie ribbing aside, not sure why anyone would talk about chokes. South Africa were backs against the wall after the first innings and were pounded on day 3. Achieving a draw with the better chance of winning is a top effort. Worthy #1 team.

CSA bending over was inevitable - cancellation would have been a financial disaster for them - and BCCI knew it. BCCI held all the cards and got exactly what they wanted: a short series allowing time to fit in a home series.

Who in the ICC would have the balls to fine India. If they did, they could easily tell BCCI to stop meddling in the internal affairs of another member board.

I'm saying that was the media excuse. The dispute is well publicized, but if that was still ongoing, the tour would have been cancelled altogether.
  14. L

***Official*** India in South Africa 2013/14

Nope that was the excuse. The West Indies tour was never on the schedule and was arranged last minute. if Lorgat was the reason, the SA tour wouldn't have happened at all.

But he would prob have played instead of Rahane, who made a critical contribution in the first and final innings.

That tour has been on the schedule for a long time. The third test in SA was cancelled to incorporate the West Indies series and there's only 1 reason for that.

Nah, let's have a farcical coronation of Tendulkar against cannon fodder West Indies instead.

Smith pretty much just said this in the post-match interview. Said Morkel's condition factored into the decision.

Yeah, I thought the same. You also have to know the fielders. If it's Zaheer Khan, that's one thing. It was Rahane who had already run out Smith with a direct hit.

South Africa wimped out big time. With 4 overs to go, there was very little chance they could lose. Unfathomable. The only explanation I can think of is maybe Morkel, although he was padded up, could barely bat. And Smith knows that Tahir is a real rabbit.
