Yeah they usually play with no defensive midfielder and it leaves a huge gap there. It’s been a weakness since Keane retired tbh, although Casemiro was good there last season.

Purdy only threw 4 interceptions so I’d ask for a recount.

At amateur level here games now get called off at the last minute fairly regularly because they can’t find a ref. It’s really ****ing annoying. But nobody wants to do it. I don’t understand why anyone at all does it given how they’re treated. And like you say, it’s coming from the top.

It’s a weird one, but if you don’t want to get sent off you could maybe just not abuse the ref.

At least you’ve finally found a way to make Pickett look competent.

The best teams used to always be a bit nasty, because the game rewarded a bit of nastiness. It made them very easy to hate. It’s not really like that now. City must be the most indifference-inspiring elite sports team of all time.

I actually think Ndombele and Lo Celso were decent signings that just didn’t work out. It’s not like with Fred where you watch two games and wonder what they were thinking. Ndombele especially was ridiculously talented. Dortmund shouldn’t have fired Klopp either. I can’t remember if it was...

Yeah I agree. At the time it felt like it was becoming untenable. I might even have agreed with it back then, I can’t really remember. But with hindsight I think the zoomed out perspective was the right one. The squad was at the end of a cycle and they were just never going to find a better...

Imagine telling someone, when Poch replaced Tim Sherwood, that it would end with people earnestly saying things like "they had to sack him, getting to a Champions League final five months earlier just papered over the cracks." Spurs were a joke club and he completely transformed their entire...

A lot of online Arsenal fans wanted Arteta out at a couple of particularly low points, but I never got the impression the club were considering it, or that the dressing room had turned against him. The results were poor but the usual ‘this really isn’t working’ warning signs weren’t there...

Yeah but the fact that you’ve had to go back 33 years for an example proves my point.

It's extremely rare for clubs to wrongly sack a manager IMO. I can think of a few examples like Spurs sacking Poch. But most sackings should have happened months or years earlier.

I also feel like Liverpool were never this bad. They were more competitive in one off games, but they also had some seasons where they finished in mid table. Maybe they were about as shambolic and the nature of the game has changed. Top teams are more dominant and rich teams rarely fall below 6th.

I’ve noticed recently that most people become self aware at some point in their lives, but hardly any actually change as a result of becoming self aware.

Yeah he’s been alright in the league, made some very good saves but got away with a few big mistakes. In Europe he’s been a complete disaster. Looks terrible technically too, no idea at all what he’s doing on the second goal.

Yeah just for dissent it looks like. Good change IMO. They brought it in for cynical fouls in Gaelic football and it was a definite improvement. That’d be a good change for soccer too, adding a sin bin to any situation where a player takes a yellow for the team.

I didn’t mean to imply causation exactly, they could do much better even with VAR. But the current shambles is a consequence of VAR eliminating the grey areas of refereeing that were necessary for the game to make sense. Handball rules weren’t designed to be dissected in slow motion. The ref...

The CL is just constant awful penalty decisions these days. Pre-VAR it was one of the best sporting competitions in the world and now I rarely even bother watching.
