What Qualifies as a Test Allrounder?

It's easy to say these things, but Marshall would have had to double his average to be a successful Test batsman, and by that logic you might reckon that Miller, Imran, Botham and Kapil could have averaged 60+ if they hadn't been bowlers.

Surprisingly few bowlers have bowled 100 Test wickets - apart from those mentioned it's only Trueman (103), Wasim (102) and Waqar (102).

Cricket stuff that doesn't deserve its own thread

I remember when Tufnell took 6-25 against WI at the Oval a couple of years later, they batted like they hadn't a clue how to cope (though admittedly that was mostly the tail-enders). In both games Haynes scored plenty at the other end, so the pitches weren't especially bad (and WI seemed to...

No - Border took 7-46 against West Indies at Sydney in 1989. Most wickets for an Aussie SLA (again excluding Johnston, Ironmonger and Saunders) is 53 by Ray Bright.

Cricket stuff that doesn't deserve its own thread

The total number of Test wickets taken by all the Australians listed on Cricinfo as slow left-arm orthodox bowlers is 276; less than any one of Herath, Vettori or Underwood. (However, Bill Johnston, Bert Ironmonger and Jack Saunders are listed as "mixture/unknown", and their SLA wickets might...

I don't have access to numbers of run outs, or to whether a bowler's wickets are with/without help. For each innings I just have the player's runs, bowling figures (overs, runs, wickets), number of catches and number of stumpings.

Good spot - due to a bug in my code both the Imran Khans were being counted as one player. I've added him in (though he's not especially high in the lists - fewer runs per game than you might think and not very many catches).

The Noteworthy 'Others' of the Grace Era

George Freeman was reckoned by most to be the best bowler early in Grace's career (he played most of his cricket in 1867-71). James Southerton was another leading bowler around 1865-1875 (first to take 200 wickets in a season), but is now mainly remembered for playing in the first Test match...

Incidentally, in the Nottingham, Auckland and Chennai matches in this list, there was a 150 scored for the other team as well. As is evident from this list, there's never been a Test in which all four innings contained a 150; in fact AFAICT the only match were all four innings contained a score...

Yes (Miandad and Dhawan's first Test innings are also in the list).
