Great lower order batting teams in history?

I wouldn't call it easily the best: Australia did a similar "send the tail in early" approach for the 2nd innings at Melbourne in 1902 (the first innings totals had been 112 and 61), so their last 5 was Hill-Trumper-Noble-Duff-Armstrong, who all had Test batting averages in the 30s. England at...

Great lower order batting teams in history?

They all played in all 4 Tests in 1999, but in the 1st Test they were batting 6-9, with Doull and Allott 10 and 11. Edit: In total, they played in 14 Tests together, with 8 of them where they batted 7-10 (or would have done but for nightwatchmanning).

Great lower order batting teams in history?

They did bat very deep (Lindsay, Procter, Peter Pollock at 8/9/10 in that Test), but Goddard was an opener - that one innings at 9 is his only time outside the top 5 in 41 Tests. Australia in 1924-5 had a strong tail: Kelleway (252@28), Gregory (224@25), Oldfield (291@41), Mailey (129@18) was...

    Players Who Retired Early

Peter May similarly played his last Test aged 31. Ted Dexter is an unusual case in that he basically retired injured aged 30, but came back 3 years later and played a couple more Tests. Colin Milburn similarly retired due to damaged vision aged 27, but played some county cricket (with little...

Ranking CW's top test cricketers by Career ICC Rating Average

The 1% drop for every game missed is mentioned in Marcus Berkmann's book about the ratings, published in 1990. (The book claims that its publication meant the algorithms were "set in stone", but I don't think that's actually correct).

    Diminishing Draft - Simulation

Having gone through them, it seems that the averages are right, but the not-out counts are wrong (I thought they looked a bit high). Incidentally, my XI's average first innings score in our 15 home matches was 527 8-)

    Diminishing Draft - Simulation

Some of the batting averages don't seem to work: e.g. if Lara scored 2484 runs in 51 innings with 5 not outs, his average would be 54.00, not 50.69.

CW's 50 Best ODI Cricketers of all time - The Countdown

It wasn't just team-mates like Wasim who rated him - I remember people like Compton and Benaud saying he looked a classy batsman, and his county record (especially in one-day matches, but his FC record was also decent) justifies that. I think he was also the first player (for England at least)...
