    Harold Larwood VS Jacques Kallis

Since when did anyone claim Larwood to be the best fast bowler ever (except possibly aesthetically)?

    Harold Larwood VS Jacques Kallis

Yep, Bradman's stats were really restricted by two bowlers he played 0 Tests against.

    Neil Harvey vs Geoffrey Boycott

Surprised Harvey is winning this easily. Boycott maintained a world class standard for almost 20 years. Harvey had a phenomenal start to his career, but only averaged about 40 for the second half of his career. Obviously Harvey was much better to watch so perhaps that swings it for some people.

    Les Ames vs Alan Knott

Not really comparable bats, except based on Test stats against the best side of their time. Ames has over 100 first class centuries and a Test average over 40. Knott was never a top class batsman at any level of professional cricket. But Knott's ATG keeping takes this, IMO.

    Les Ames vs Alan Knott

Knott the better keeper and Ames while the better batsman was very much a downhill skier

    The Thommo method of Bowling

Its very lazy and completely inaccurate to claim that in every other sport the players are far better, stronger and faster etc than in their previous era's. While there are many examples of sports where the standard has improved, there are certainly plenty where it has stagnated. For instance...

    Mike Procter dead at 77

    And Rhodes. RIP.
  9. a massive zebra

    Pat Cummins vs Alan Davidson

Cummins is a boring bowler to watch. Obviously Davidson is way before my time but from the clips I've seen he looks like the sort of bowler you would pay to see. In 50 years time Cummins will be forgotten by everyone except stats geeks, yet we are still talking about Davidson.

What is the greatest feat of longevity in test cricket?

Well you've moved the goalposts as we were originally talking about sustained world class performance over a long period of time, rather than overall output/calibre across whole careers. As you said, lets agree to disagree.

What is the greatest feat of longevity in test cricket?

Ah I think you are right... I got confused because the statement was made before the player was mentioned... my bad

What is the greatest feat of longevity in test cricket?

McGrath balls bowled: First class cricket (including Tests): 41,759 List A (including ODIs): 15,808 T20 (including T20I): 432 Total: 57,999 Not in the decade of the 1980s. The most Tests played by a pure bowler in the 1980s was Marshall with 63 (although all-rounders Kapil and Botham played...

What is the greatest feat of longevity in test cricket?

This statement is misleading. Rhodes hardly played any Test cricket in his bowling pomp between 1898 and 1902, during which time he must have been one of the best bowlers ever. Between 1898 and 1903, Rhodes took an incredible 940 county championship wickets at 13.63. He was Yorkshire's leading...

    Jacques Kallis vs Greg Chappell

The second half of Kallis' career was a higher scoring era than Chappell's with a far lower overall standard of fast bowling. He was also a huge minnow basher - if you ignore his performances against Bangladesh, West Indies and Zimbabwe, his record was clearly worse than Chappell.
  15. a massive zebra

    Waqar vs Bumrah

Waqar's peak was better than Bumrah, but he was clearly far less penetrative for the second half of his career, after his pace dipped and the reverse swing became less deadly. Waqar for now, but Bumrah if he can sustain his current level for several more years.

    Jasprit Bumrah vs Allan Donald

    Bumrah, for sure.

What is the greatest feat of longevity in test cricket?

But in earlier eras, the best players actually played more cricket and their bodies actually endured more physical strain. The difference being that unlike the last three decades, their careers were not dominated by international cricket. For instance, Malcolm Marshall bowled almost 100,000...

What is the greatest feat of longevity in test cricket?

What is really misleading is to add a couple of years to his peak period in order to claim his world class streak was longer than anyone else, when in reality his performance in his penultimate year was far from world class (avge 30) and in his final year he played just one Test. Yes Hadlee...

What is the greatest feat of longevity in test cricket?

Bit of a stretch to claim McGrath maintained world class performance across the 12 year period from 1995 to 2007. He averaged 30 in 2006 and played one Test in 2007. 95 to 2005 would be fair enough, but other players have maintained similar levels of performance over a decade, they just played...

What is the greatest feat of longevity in test cricket?

Alf Valentine 2,535 balls bowled in just 4 Tests against England in 1950.
