Also, it would be good to have the stats for specific time periods as that is how I calculate the points. If not, I would just have to play with what is available.

Well, we are only doing the last 30 years so lets not go all time. In the last 30 years, 1-3: 37.16 4-7: 36.67 Not much of a difference. 1-7: 36.9 8-11: 15.34 And yeah, 2:1 is generous. So may be 5:2.

Well, by individual examples I meant not to base it on the stats of specific bowlers as that will obviously lead to favoritism. But historically most teams had their best bat at no.4 (Sachin, Lara, Kallis, etc). So it would be better to have a break down of 1-4, 5-7 and 8-11. There will still...

I was just looking at the sheets and observed that bowlers with a good SR also have a higher WPI as they have taken wickets quickly. So they would anyways be rewarded without having to factor in SR. And now the challenge I have is with awarding points for top and middle order wickets. Howstat...

No, he wasn't. Should have minimum 8 years since the 90s.

Top 30 batsmen of the modern era (1990s -Current) - Updated

Fandom clouds judgement, especially when your batsman is a world cup winning hero. That is understandable. Having said that, De Silva does hold up well in the peak rankings. Has the 4th best peak in the 90s and ahead of the names he mentioned. He could have instead been happy with that.

Its hard to generalize if low-SR/high-ER is better than high-SR/low-ER. As it depends on the match conditions and team composition. But one thing I am clear about is this. Cricket is a game of ball vs bat. If we consider one metric as important for bowlers, mathematically the reciprocal of the...

By that same logic, a batsman who faces more deliveries helps to build partnerships. Would you be ok if we awarded points for balls faced in batsmen ranking? No, it is not directly proportionate. A bowler can have a high ER and a low average if his SR is low.

As a standalone metric, SR is obviously more important than ER. But that is not the question. The question is, what works better when combined with average. For a given average, is a low SR bowler better than a low ER bowler? In other words, is high ER better than low ER?

hmm.. But I a looking for the same data for certain periods and not the entire career. This may still be useful, thanks. In that case would you agree that batsmen should be rewarded for no. of balls faced per dismissal ?

Can you link me to the stats where I can see the bowlers' record in say 90s against no.1-7?

People who say SR is important for bowlers, would they agree if one said points should be awarded for batsmen for facing more deliveries? If they don't then I think they are contradicting.

IMO, the methodology for bowlers' ranking should be the mirror image of the method we use for batsmen. The reason we consider the likes of Sachin and Pointing as better than the likes of Dravid and Kallis is that they are more fluent in scoring runs and hence more dominating. Likewise, a bowler...

Agreed, but how do we do that? Cricinfo doesn't have that option.

Then why is ER a metric for bowlers?

The more l think of it the more complicated it seems. If SR is important for bowlers, why is that metric (i.e balls faced per dismissal) non-existent for batsmen?

    For a higher sample size we can consider this, Overs Runs Wks Avg Econ SR A 190 660 27 24.4 3.5 42.2 B 205 660 27 24.4 3.2 45.6 C 230 660 27 24.4 2.9 51.1

Lets not think in terms of specific bowlers as that may lead us to be biased. I know its difficult but lets try not to. Average will be the base and I don't think that will change. Now consider the below, Overs Runs Wks Econ SR A 16 60 3 3.8 32 B 20 60 3 3.0 40 C 24 60 3...

So I am going to start working on the bowlers ranking. I will be using the same formulas I used for batsmen with slight changes. Bowling average and WPI with a weightage of 3:1 Instead of SR I will be using Econ. Bowlers who have their Econ above the mean will receive a penalty of 1% for every...
