I was a big fan of Fleming. Great leader and was also a gun slipper. Genuine question: Boult and Wagner have similar records but what have they been like in various conditions?

    McGrath/Tendulkar or Imran/Kallis

McGrath and Tendulkar are probably the guys in the modern era with the most consistent success against everyone, everywhere. I’d go with that.

Not meaning to be a pedant, but Border batted more of his career at either 4 or 5 than he did 6, and he didn’t need to bat 3 with Boon locked in and successful at 3 for a long time

Shame he was pretty ordinary once real pace came into the equation. Which wouldn’t work in an ATG scenario.

Don’t think he was a worse first slip than Hayden by a distance. Hayden was very good in gully but about on par with Warne at slip. And Warne was better than Langer, who was in the cordon a bit. Clearly Taylor and Waugh were better, but they were better than almost anyone ever.

That’s fair, dunno if there’s legit catch percentage stats, but I can’t remember Warne dropping too many at first. He was pretty good in there

Settle down. It’s not about AFL. It’s about guys who had natural athleticism and were better in the field than others. You see it across the board in cricketers. Guys who could’ve potentially made elite level in multiple sports are better fielders.

Whatever, semantics, fact is he played reserves AFL footy and was clearly a very good Aust rules footballer. And a natural athlete. He wasn’t just a fat bloke they plonked in the slips. He was a good fielder and very good slipper.

Warne‘s ability is pretty underplayed by referring to him that way. He was a natural athlete who was almost good enough to play AFL. Wasn’t a genius slipper like MWaugh but was definitely very good at 1st slip

Think he was a pretty solid outfielder. Played AFL and was a good catch

Do you believe slip fielding should factor in to your selection of an ATG XI that you intend to take the field

An Australian ATG/ATVG XI that was proper gun in the field might be good to select. Elite fielders, good enough at elite level. Fine, I’ll do it: Mark Taylor (slip) Ricky Ponting (cover/point/slip) Greg Chappell (slip) Mark Waugh (slip) Neil Harvey (cover) Allan Border (midwicket/slip) Keith...

Pretty much agree but I’d bat Sachin at 4 and Viv at 5. Any two of Hobbs, Hutton and Gavaskar. And I’d have Wasim over Steyn as I like the left arm variety and the ability to bowl with the old ball (which I know Steyn also possessed)
