This isn't a bad shout. Normal logic would dictate that making your captain keep and open the batting would be too much, but he's not scoring runs so it really wouldn't lose a lot of output for us. I wouldn't go Santner, however, I'd back Blundell to cover him in runs and you already have two...

    2024–25 NZ domestic season

Two Westies and a South African walk into a bar...? Sounds hilarious

What parts of the game would you like to see return to modern cricket?

Only in my opinion - which is all it ever is - I just don't think it's solving a problem, in regards to the lbw law. It probably creates more - all of a sudden, the whole book on batting technique is out the window. I don't think batters would become more defensive - they'd become sitting...

It's definitely a loss, the guy has 8880 Test runs and a wealth of experience. I am happy Young is getting another go after this week, but he's not Kane.

What parts of the game would you like to see return to modern cricket?

I've heard of this on boring batting days, but in the field? Truly masterful sleight of hand stuff if true

What parts of the game would you like to see return to modern cricket?

Yeah, neither. I couldn't understand why it needed to be modernised, either. What positive outcome do we get out of it, how does the game improve? Is it an issue or a frustration now? Not one I generally hear about. In fact, I'd suggest that it would lead to less foot movement, which is supposed...

What parts of the game would you like to see return to modern cricket?

Not the first one - limited overs over Tests? I can happily, and easily make significant cases for the current law. With what you're saying (unless I misunderstood) there would be no more rules about pitching in line, hitting in line or striking outside the line. So every ball, conceivably...

I don't think a single one of us would have seen that coming...but a responsible, odds-playing Tim Southee innings was very close to the difference between a loss and victory on the subcontinent. Crazy. We have to give credit where it's due. That might be the best proper cricket innings of his...

No doubt, but they're not going to go that way. Remember Santner got 60 odd in the dead rubber innings in the 2nd Test at Galle, and the camp were pretty buoyant about that performance under a limited amount of pressure

Depends on the right sort of weather, I presume? But yeah, I don't think there's any of us who expect India to plan to do anything other than prepare one that brings Ashwin, Jadeja and Kuldeep into it. And possibly even pick Axar, as well? If so, you'd have to hope and pray it isn't Santner...

That's not the point I made - I'm not critical of the call at the toss. I'm critical of the failure to read what the pitch was doing once they'd made that call, and adjust their approach to put some sort of score up that wasn't 46. I agree with the above, it was stubborn and wildly over...

100% agree with what you've said. My point moreso, maybe not well made, is that I don't question for a second that we had the better of the conditions. I, however, think a more resilient, backs to the wall Indian side should have made more of the predicament they found themselves in. 46 all out...

New Zealand doom and gloom thread

It doesn't fill me with pride, me old mate, to be so demeaning of Stead. Good luck to him but what happened this week owes to great skill, not tactic and ideal planning. That can change, however,in the next two tests. I'd love to praise what happens next

New Zealand doom and gloom thread

To give Stead praise, you have to ignore that two of the three best performers were a) a guy he didn't pick in either Test last month and b) a guy he batted at 7 and 8 in Tests, ODIs and T20s for 2-3 years until injuries led him to discover Rachin is really ****ing good.

India obviously got the decision wrong at the toss, and ran into probably one of the top 3 spicy pitch bowlers in the world (Henry) and O'Rourke, the type of bowler India never match up on well. But their approach, once they knew it was doing a bit, was poor. I've seen plenty of teams win...

Here's a reminder the dunderhead in the photo above didn't play him in either Test in Sri Lanka last month 🤣

It wasn't, it was easier. Then they fluffed their lines, when again getting through the new ball - as it was in the first innings - would have put them in a much better position. My post days earlier about Indian sides not wanting to battle when the ball was doing a lot and the going gets tough...

Rachin is MOM incidentally, I don't think that's a hard decision at all. That first innings knock was all class and authority
