Career Averages that dont do justice

At best you could claim it's marginally more difficult. A proper, uneven dustbowl is incredibly hard to score runs on; a proper, uneven greentop is incredibly hard to score runs on. The physical threat may be greater from the latter, but the difficulty of scoring runs is marginally different at...

Career Averages that dont do justice

As I say, UIMM that's the only part of the 30-odd-year career which he enjoyed which came on matting wickets. Uncovered or covered doesn't tend to make a massive difference to wristspinners. It's fingerspinners who found the death-knell from covering.

Career Averages that dont do justice

It's interesting, Spofforth apparently boasted that he "was the fastest there ever was", and among the many dismissals of that was Lord Harris (or was it Hawke...?) who called it "harmless delusion" and proceeded to list 6 or 7 who he believed clearly quicker. Spofforth, from what I've tended...

    New Cricinfo Design

I find it amusing that however many months post-redesign it is, there's still plenty of possible ways you can get the old-school design.

Who Is The Second Greatest Batsman Ever?

I said it can give you a good first impression but that said first impression needs to be tempered. I feel you can form a fair assessment without an instinctive impression formed by watching a player as a game was unfolding (ie, when you didn't know what you were about to be shown before you...

Who Is The Second Greatest Batsman Ever?

Don't agree. It can give you a good first impression but instinct needs to be tempered and the conclusion your instinct has given you needs to be evaluated before you can see whether it was really right or not.

Vaas vs Srinath vs Lee vs Zaheer vs Sobers

By substantial career I mean playing reasonably consistently (ie, with not that much time out with injury or non-selection) over a period of about 7-8 years or more. As for Vaas, he was up and down with barely a moment's notice as to what was coming next - impossibly inconsistent. You won't...

Career Averages that dont do justice

I think so (mostly, perhaps not exclusively by 1900) but those games make-up no more than a miniscule proportion of Barnes' career. Did he make more than 1 tour there?

Who Is The Second Greatest Batsman Ever?

Speculation on how he drove through the covers isn't - that's preserved for all to see in photos and the odd video. Speculation on how good he was is precisely that - but the same is true of any player. To some extent (even if only incredibly minimal), how good someone was relative to another is...

Vaas vs Srinath vs Lee vs Zaheer vs Sobers

I've no objection to the notion that Lee at his best was equable with Vaas at his best, but sheesh, Vaas produced his best ~50% of his career, at regular intervals, Lee barely produced it 25% of his, two very short periods at the start and near the end. I know who that makes superior to my...

    Waqar Younis

Not to worry - main reason no-one's ever heard the claim be made is because no-one's ever actually suggested the possibility of a comparison. All I was pointing-out was that a claim was being made which was untrue. If it'd been made even after these relatively few posts it'd have been true, but...

was cricket more fun in the 90's?

(And just to clarify - this IS NOT an accusation! Merely an observation.)

    No.

Vaas vs Srinath vs Lee vs Zaheer vs Sobers

Same could be applied to quite a few other things - but why would anyone bother splitting-up a word then hyphenating it?

    Waqar Younis

What I said was any form of comparison based on part of one player's career and all of another's is meaningless. In terms of entire careers, Fleming for me played easily enough, even though substantially less than Waqar, for me to consider him a superior ODI bowler. There is no contradiction...

    Left-arm spinners

Broadly speaking, there's no doubt that, on a turning pitch against a batting line-up which is in majority RHBs, a stock-standard left-arm fingerspinner is at an advantage over a stock-standard right-arm fingerspinner - the ball which turns away is harder to counter than the one which turns in...

Vaas vs Srinath vs Lee vs Zaheer vs Sobers

Is there? What possible logic is there in splitting-up (see?) one word into two then hyphenating them? A write-off and to write it off is the same thing though - well, it can be, at least, there are actually a couple of things which can be meant by "a write-off", but one of them is the noun...

    Waqar Younis

I can accept that, but I do feel that when someone is claiming something they cannot possibly have actual knowledge of it needs to be pointed-out. I also feel that when people are biased, especially on a home basis, it needs to be pointed-out.

It's completely and totally pointless to bring something up which has zero relevance - unless you're attempting to undermine the credibility of a poster by painting their views as ludicrous. Fortunately, recently there seems to have come realisation that such attempts are no less reprehensive...

The OhMy is posted as :-O on CW. And yes, in ODIs Fleming was better.
