    Is it fair to say he's become someone who will still help set up wins/save games with some regularity but no longer seems capable of a true match-winning contribution by himself? Which makes him worth his spot in the side whilst the "with some regularity" bit holds true imo

    When the OP was made, he was averaging 59 for the year tbf (down to 53 now). I thought he was worse, but his bad tests from the India series were last year. 4 and a bit tests though, which imo put him below players with a similar record over more tests

    He's opened a couple of times, once in the UAE where we had just a few overs to chase a small target and once at home where we needed to blast quick runs from the start to set up a declaration. Made 4 & 0, I think.

    It could well end up being worse in terms of how (non) competetive we are, but I can't see it hurting anywhere close to the other two. This tour is very much like the the previous 4-0 where we've gone in with no expectations and have been proven right to do so

    Some of those tests (might have been quite a few) would have been played as a specialist batsman too, in fairness, when he came back into the side Bairstow had the gloves and kept them for a while
