Your ATG team pace bowling trio

You could play 8 specialist bats, and still have the GOAT bowling attack, even if your second bowler was poor in this hypothetical. SR matters much less in the context of an ATG team than a regular one. But it doesn't stop being a factor in terms of averages until your average is the same as...

Your ATG team pace bowling trio

He was the most destructive bowler of all time on unhelpful tracks. Just could be more expensive than others of comparable quality. Helpful wickets is where others could be more destructive.

Your ATG team pace bowling trio

Are you implying there is a crossover point for low SRs not being useful? There will be times you are playing for a draw etc., but if you could find a bowler getting hit for 28 runs an over at an average of 22, he'd be better than Bradman.

Your ATG team pace bowling trio

His batting is a factor for me too (although I reckon I'd find room for him based on bowling style and quality even if he was a proper spud).

Your ATG team pace bowling trio

Marshall, who pretty much everyone is voting for, is the odd one out in terms of style in this list. For everyone else, a big proportion of quality comes from being an accurate channel bowler (and were slower, and very good with seam movement). Or from reverse. Who were quicker, less...

    The long tail conundrum...

Your poll was effectively pick a 4th bowler to go along with Marshall, Warne and Mcgrath. Only one option did not include all 3, and it included Steyn, who is the least popular pick from your shortlist. You are assuming these 3 are consensus picks. Which is fairly likely true. But saying people...

    The long tail conundrum...

Using a poll that you made (in which you picked the options according to your preferred choices) as evidence that people agree with with choices you are defending is extremely disingenuous. That said, there's a good chance they would be generally preferred, even with a more honest range of...

Top five Slippers (slip fielders) you've seen..

I can't recall seeing better against spin, and that is without accounting for the fact that fielding 1st slip to Murali bowling an obnoxious amount of SLs overs may be the toughest job a slip has ever had.

Do tailend runs affect your cricketer rating?

This needs to be contexualised though, even as a tail ender. If you are batting 11, a SR of close to zero would be great. If you are batting 8, a SR close to zero while you are batting with a recognised bat is good, but if you have 3 Martin's below you, you need to start hitting out when the...

    John Woodcock's 100 Greatest Cricketers

From his cricinfo bio: Spanning the era when underarm bowling gave way to lobs, he was one of the first players to use his feet to attack bowlers, and so effective was he that concerns grew that the batsmen were too dominant.

Top five Slippers (slip fielders) you've seen..

How agile were Hooper and Richie? I have vague memories of them having very safe hands, but I don't remember much of them otherwise.

    Best Cordons

Part of this would be the low % of spin bowled.

    Players with no peak

His averages by country and opponent are ridiculous.

Do tailend runs affect your cricketer rating?

In terms of actually selecting a bowler based on a smidge of extra batting, it's very seldom going to make sense. Unless you have a seriously weak tail issue, you aren't dropping a notably better bowler for this type of gain. You probably need a situation where your 3rd best quick is percieved...

Do tailend runs affect your cricketer rating?

Tail end performances swing a lot of test results. Draws and wins. Sometime by just surviving in partnerships and sometimes by actually scoring runs. So how well a bowler can bat does change my view of them. As we are limiting this to a small batting gain, it's going to be a small change in my...

    Best Attack

Glad you cleared that up. I thought you were picking him for his charming personality.

    Best Attack

I think Marshall is better without bringing batting into it (although Mcgrath had a greater career). They are very close though. I've got no problem with either of them (or Hadlee) being named top. So I just tend to rank them by batting ability.

    Best Attack

I'm saying something a bit like this. Runs count from any position. And we have seen a lot of tests saved by a 10/11 hanging on. Picking between 2 actual 11s, its not likely to make any real difference, and unless the choice is something crazy like Pommie Mbangwa vs Symcox, batting quality is...

    Best Attack

Just play an extra bowling option if you don't fancy the balance. Miller would be good for balance. Not that I'd come close to picking him as the 5th bowler, but even someone like Akram should give you at least a comparable amount of runs, and a much, much stronger bowling lineup.
