Looks like it's going to be hard Yakka today, no spin in the first hour though. You need Leach on all day tbh.

England players and selection discussion thread

Woakes is a better FC batter (though it's tight) and a better FC bowler (by a distance) than Curran.

Apparently Root was the last guy to bat through a day, in Galle in 2021. The test match were Dom Bess took a cheap 5fer. His record in his last few tests in SL and India was reasonably OK but what a fall in form - he is only 27.

Do a Neil Smith onto the pitch then get on with it again.

Yes bat as long as possible and exhaust the bowlers. If you can't bowl them out again then that's the pitch but England should aim to not bat again if possible

Well, two deliveries there suggests retiring them for the rest of the day!!!

Just guts it out for the last 90 mins of the day. It doesn't matter if the NRR slows. I'd rather a knackered Root/Brook are at the crease than a new bat, particularly with the new ball coming.

Karun Nair didn't exactly have a long test career.

I seriously think one of the openers should be the vice captains, probably Crawley tbh.

This is such a gimme pitch that you'll usually get yourself out, so we should be aiming for parity. Then the pressure is on Pakistan as it's more likely you'll lose a game in the third innings rather than the fourth.

    Don't forget Atkinson's ton.

He's had a lean patch so this is the kind of ground Brook needs to rediscover some form. No real demons and no new ball for 30 overs.

Also a fantastic effort by Duckett. Had a difficult start to test cricket when Ashwin had him on toast. But went back, scored runs and made himself unignorable. His play against spin has improved massively. Maybe Robinson could take note.

He may as well keep playing assertively. I don't get too annoyed at ZC really. His ceiling is that if a mid-30s opener. He plays great drives but doesn't have a strong defensive technique to be at the next tier. Whereas I do think Pope has far more to offer than he currently gives.

If 'Pato' Banton could bat for Somerset with one leg and smack a fifty then Duckett can get back out there tomorrow.
