The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Hirst as far as I know, was a disaster on the hard good wickets of Australia, was absolutely terrible in his first tour, in his second tour the numbers are a little better looking but it should be mentioned that he got 5/48 in the final test after a lot of rain had fallen on monday and rendered the wicket a sticky and thus allowed him to finally bowl a good spell, before that rain, Hirst had taken 10 wickets in 9 innings at 40 a piece. Don't really think much of him, that's why I think two pacers and then spinners is the way for the Yorkshire XI.
Hirst was preferred to Barnes for home Tests until he turned forty. Also in Australia in 1903-04. Obviously their records overseas do not compare.

yeah his record in England is very good, on the good Australian wickets, was his skillset just too limited in comparison to say a Barnes or a Rhodes?

Compared with them, yes. His swerve (left-arm inswing from round the wicket) didn't work in the thinner atmosphere. A fondness for the pull shot also proved his undoing there at times, as it did with Jessop.

Captain Warner said that one reason why Barnes was left out of the tour to Australia in 1903-04 was that he had not yet mastered the ball coming back off the pitch. Virtually everything went away. Warner confirmed that Barnes' "leg-break" was "cut rather than spun".

Pretty silly in hindsight, Plum.

Though I guess it didn’t end up mattering with Rhodes dominating that tour.

what a sneak, and dude, if you want to have Cook then forget about Compton and have May at 5, so he can be the captain, Cook was the most hopeless captain I saw in Test Cricket.
May was a fab batsman
Compton > May

Both indisputable facts

Would be hard to change this XI to make it better even without restrictions. Probably Sachin come in for Richards or Smith I guess
