The Most Inexcusable Droppings by Selectors

Eh not really. The Ashes was sort of his death knell. I reckon if he’d had a decent series he might’ve retired then, especially if they’d won. Then he had a meh series in India and got to go out on a relative high at home. Seemed pretty fitting.
As I say, I think it was the right time for him to go, and the problem for England since then certainly hasn't been in the seam bowling department, even on the absolute graveyard of a pitch in Multan

I am not just unhappy. I am ****ing angry at the England selectors on suddenly dropping him and Hartley and bringing Atkinson and Bashir in their place, a decision that primarily cost me the fantasy draft last year.
that being said, he won't get away bowling 78mph in tests no matter how tight his line and length is

Bill lawry in 1971 in that seventh test?trevor goddard in 1970 after the third test(not sure) against australia as he wouldn't play in England

Mohammad Abbas of Pakistan..

He did not deserve to be dropped in 2021 with a career bowling average of 23 , he waited 3 years for another test call up .

Abbas then takes 10 wickets @24 vs South Africa in 2 tests on his return and is then dropped for West Indies series in Pakistan which Pakistan fail to win.

No Pakistani seamer has taken 200 test wickets in the 21st century , yet Abbas has only played 27 tests for his 100 test wickets .

The 3 years before he got dropped in 2021 he averaged mid 30s

He had a shoulder injury and didn’t look very good when he came back iirc. He’s a very horses for courses type bowler imo. Would’ve been flogged on the dead roads in Pakistan, but then again who wasn’t.

2019 was his only bad year , 2020 and 2021 he averaged 31.30 and 31.75 respectively which is not bad enough to be dropped for 3 years.
A bowler in his 30s averaging 30s for that period probably doesn't make the top 100 when it comes to selection injustices.

Also Pakistan had another younger medium pacer (Hasan Ali) who had a good 2021 averaging 16, plus all rounder Faheem Ashram. A Test team really can't risk playing so many medium pacers.

Abbas can feel hard done by, but it wasn't a huge injustice.

Yes this. Kerrigan was performing really well at the time. It may be that selectors could've judged him to be below standard when watching him play before picking him, but not based upon his CC output. That he wasn't picked again immediately probably had a lot to do with his mindset after that mauling. He quite quickly lost his way and not long after was struggling to get any country spot. Another spinner who went the same way was Matt Parkinson - a test match after strong outings in CC and being the best performing spinner in domestic limited overs, then within months was completely discarded by Lancs and struggling to get a gig elsewhere.

On the batting front Hameed had a similar trajectory, although he has at least salvaged a good first class and domestic career at Notts.

In retrospect, easy to blame the selectors for badly treating players who struggled with the mental aspect of the game but also hard for them to foresee these challenges in advance.

The common denominator for these three is Lancashire though.
I was at the Oval for that test. Kerrigan got the yips big time and really wasn't finishing his action. A fair few huge full tosses that wouldn't looked out of place in village cricket (and yes, I know!) A few pros/ex pros around also thought he never really had the bowling action to be a continued success. That said, it was probably a moot point after that for the 'mindset' that you suggest.

He only bowled 13 overs in India so that was more about the fitness rather than ability.
When Robinson was bowling really well, he was bowling quickly enough, if not exactly rapid. Against Australia two years ago, he was struggling for fitness and missed the latter part of the series and wouldn't return until the India series when he wasn't fit enough fpr that one off test he did play. I would agree that he should be picked so long as he's fit enough, but it doesn't look likely that he will.

I can't give Pakistan the benefit of the doubt because they don't have a good track record of managing players , the fact that Abbas got recalled in 2024 proves they got it wrong , they should have persisted with him because he can bowl long spells , hardly injured and is economical..They could have used him in combination with Shaheen Afridi and Hasan Ali who would bat above Abbas ..

And then if that was not an injustice, dropping him straight after the SA tour certainly was ..

He was the best Pakistan seamer in SA, he could have been used as the sole seamer in Pakistan where he has a great record in domestic cricket

He played 3 tests in Pakistan , 9 wickets @23 , and this was during 2019-2020 his worst period in test cricket

Pakistan have a surfeit of pace bowlers all of a similar standard, ie borderline international class. Very easy to pull the next one of the rank if you have misgivings about an incumbent
