A young Brett Hampton amongst the names, too.

Hope he kills it at Hampshire, their FB post came up on my feed this week after the announcement of his signing. The old 'his career stats aren't good so he's a dud' which belies the fact Hampton has been genuine allround class for a couple of years and probably on the brink of this ODI squad

What's our take on Rob Walter? I don't know much about him at all
He's got a fair bit of history here.

'In 2016, Walter moved to New Zealand to coach the Otago Volts for five years, leading them to two finals.
In April 2021, Walter joined the Central Stags. He departed in January 2023 to assume his current position of head coach with the South Africa national cricket team. Prior to this, he had gained experience in international cricket with New Zealand A in 2022.'

Sweet, cheers for that - is there a general sense of his suitability for higher honours? I presume seeing he's taken SA, and they've got a pretty competitive side who are in the WTC final and been in the mix in ICC events, so that's a notch on his belt

He's an international coach already so I guess that must weigh hugely in his favour. The article below may be of interest, he clearly knows the current NZ players well.

"The exact nature of Walter's involvement will largely depend on whether Stead wants to continue in the role, as he remains New Zealand's first choice for head coach and whether he wants to continue coaching the national side in all formats. "

Urrrrrgghhhhh...

Stead's gotta go.

7 years is long enough - an extension to the next WC would make it 9 years. As far as replacements go, Walter isn't the worst - he's known to the setup, knows the players, & hopefully has a vision of where to go forward.

Sumo on commentary just 'announcing' an NZ A tour to Bangladesh.

There was supposed to be one last spring, that got canceled.

No mention of when this tour happening. Eg this autumn? Or not until spring again?

Next home summer will have a similar feel about it to this one with an ICC tournament smack bang in the heart of the NZ home season, the T20 WC in India / Sri Lanka in February / March.

Article today in the Sunday Star Times states: ‘Gary Stead is likely seems likely to have had his last match in charge (of the Black Caps’

Then there’s this article from The Post -

‘The prospect of Rob Walter becoming the new Black Caps coach looks to have firmed considerably this week.
The 49-year-old has remained based in New Zealand, with a wife and family here, and appears ideally placed to take over from long-term New Zealand head coach Gary Stead, whose contract expires at the end of the season.’

NZ home international cricket seasons now well and truly start in October. Next spring Bay Oval will host a 3 match T20 series in October against Australia which will be branded as a Chappell-Hadlee Series. In the same month England will visit NZ for 3 T20’s and 3 ODI’s.

From the same information packed Sunday Star Times article, plenty of positive noises about Kane Williamson’s future with the BC’s. He’ll be playing the premier test series’s and ICC tourneys and skipping a lot of the white ball dross by the sounds of it.
Weenick: “Kane is very much playing it in a series by series basis. He is still, from my conversations with him, committed to playing for New Zealand for as long as he possibly can and as often as he possibly can. We’re working with him to pick and choose what are the key tours and peak events we’d like him to be available for.”
Williamson: “I still absolutely love playing for New Zealand and I’m looking forward to doing so again in the future.”
