Did you just say Ambrose was in his prime? What the hell is wrong with you:

"The West Indies are also worried about Curtly Ambrose - at 35, another veteran who is also suffering.

Ambrose has been suffering for some time from an injured left knee, and according to Waight, it is getting worse each day." This was pre South Africa series. He missed the final test as a result.
So you're suggesting we ignore Ambrose in SA? That's fine too. It doesn't change anything.

Nobody is suggesting we ignore anything just stop spouting misinformation. Ambrose was below par there only because he was no where close to 100%. Something tells me you already knew this, yet you posted the crap about him being "prime".

bradman wasn't tested in asia either..

worse in SA? you sure? lol
McGrath 8 mts averaged 23.6 and sr 63 in RSA 3.6 wpm

Ambrose averaged 4 mts 23.8 and sr 57.6 wpm 3.25

Bear in mind, Ambrose was already breaking down part way through the 3rd test, tried for the 4th but soon broke completely down, not bowling a single ball in South Africa's 2nd innings.

Didn't know it so it's useful context. I will consider him unproven in SA.

His previous series was 30 wickets @14.

Do you remember if he was he injured for the previous series as well, and just able to play through it before it worsened? Or did he get injured between series?

mcgrath gets overrated a lot here. He wasn't that penetrative in Asia and wasn't excellent vs SA like he was against most other teams. SA had a good batting line up but it's not anywhere near Aus.. people give him a pass for no reason.
Because 500-600+ score was quite common in every 2nd innings on those Asian highways.

I want to say Ambrose was afflicted with 'issues' even during the England series of 1998 but played through it. Then there was 6 months off, then South Africa. So it must hsve aggravated during the RSA tour to the point where he didnt bowl his usual quota during the 3rd test, missed bowling for all of the 2nd innings of the 4th and completely missed the 5th test. Fwiw, Walsh was suffering from injury as well which i know for a fact he picked up in RSA. But Walsh has always been more durable than Curtly.

Ambrose was even less penetrative in Pakistan, untested in India/SC and worse in SA.
I'm so tired of this penetrative argument as if it was just him.

Ambrose in

Pak. - 60
S.A. - 57
Eng. - 55
Aus - 48

Imran Khan in (preferred period in brackets)

Aus. - 67 (63)
Eng. - 62 (59)
Ind. - 61 (61)
N.Z. - 75 (66)

McGrath in

Eng. - 40
Ind. - 57
Pak. - 63
S.A. - 63

Who out of the 3 was the least penetrative?

The even worse in SA was better than Imran managed in any of the countries referenced there.
