They got better at utilizing I'm later on. I agree that he was a pretty terrible opening choice. I always preferred Shoaib Malik, or even Akmal if you needed a makeshift ODI opener (which Pakistan honestly usually did).
I remember Afridi in the 90s batting with Anwar. For every good cameo you have 3-4 innings where he gets out in the first two overs and exposes the rest of the fragile line up.

I would always laugh that the easiest way to get Afridi out is a rank short delivery outside off that he hits in the air. Or caught in slips.

I'm sure some tailend bowler who happened to cross the inning threshold would have the lowest time spent at crease.
I actually do believe that you ideally should have a blaster at the opening position. But I think you need a minimum run output to make it worthwhile. Jayasuria may not bat at Afridis pace but he would get that job done better. Sehwag and Gilly get that done too.

Though I would be willing to entertain Afridi opening in a Pak ATG XI as they have the batting to spare to risk him.
