Rich coming from someone who thinks Sobers is comparable to Don and Marshall forms a holy trinity with them
I don't place Marshall on the same tier with them. And what disqualifies Marshall from being no. 3. I'm listening.

And again, saying that the undisputed top 2 player of all time has an argument to be no. 1 isn't that far out there as some would make it seem.
Not suggesting he was the better batsman, nor that Sobers is clearly better or even tied overall.

Whatever disqualifies Gavaskar being top 10 bat or Kapil being better than Walsh, if I have to take guess.

Yes, it in fact is borderline lunatic to suggest.

Ahh you're just being petulant.

Sunny is in no way disqualified from the top ten. For me he varies between 10 and 11.

With regards to Walsh and Kapil, Courtney is easily the better bowler and don't see how his lower order batting usurps the value of a great strike bowler.

And it's not, you just choose to see it that way.

1. Opener? Yes

2. During his peak, Smith was clearly the best in away conditions as well

3. Sunny’s biggest plus is he scored many 100s against great fast bowlers. He scored 10 centuries against them and all of them in a span of 7-8 years.
Felt that Gavaskar’s biggest point is from the 4th innings knocks he plays at the away conditions..76 Port of Spain, 77 Brisbane and 79 Oval
Beating Australia in Australia 77’ Melbourne
And his batting against the West Indies at home conditions (thing which gets underrated)…Marshall and Holding were extremely bowling well in India and apart from Gavaskar and Vengsarkar no Indian stood up against them in 83

What are the arguments for Root becoming better than Ponting and Chappell
I don't think OS was saying Root is better than the Australians (he's actually implying Smith > Gavaskar > Ponting/Chappell > Root/Hammond.

If you did want to argue that though, Root vs Ponting would be based on Root playing in a much harder batting era, with harder home pitches + much less batting support. Root vs Chappell would be based on a more rounded away record, with Chappell barely playing in the subcontinent (4 matches, none in India). Greg's also boosted a lot by his WSC performances, so people who only look at Tests may rate him a bit lower than others. Probably should hold off these comparisons until Root has finished his career though, really.

Yeah I’m unwilling atm to put him anywhere in my top 20. Its just so hard to rate a current player. For example if he fails hard in the Ashes nobody will be comparing him to these guys anymore lol. Everyone is very fickle too. He’s definitely a genuine contender though.
