They should but does SA always make good cricketing decisions?

Depends, early 80’s or late 80’s Botham?

Blonde hair Lee or moustachioed Lillee in the 70s…. no way.

Nah. SC will always be more spin orientated.

1. Border is a better bat but would he be more needed in a quality middle order than a quality opener for SA?

2. How good would Cook be against pace Gooch faced?

3. If Aus don't tour SC much dont they keep Lillee?

4. Would 60s WI need a worldclass pacer enough? Miandad plus Imran's batting could almost compensate for Sobers.

5. Yeah could go either way.

6. If Hadlee can adjust to SL conditions it may be enough and they end up winning more away, no? Tho Murali will be more effective at home.

They had Hall. Losing Gibbs would be a big blow.

I think this makes them worse as they lose an opener when they don't need another middle order bat. Not sure the captaincy makes a difference - both successful but in different context and no guarantee AB improves SA.

80s England exchanging Gooch and Botham for Cook and Root? Wasn't Gooch's purple patch in the 90s and Botham busted for most of the 80s? So probably improves

70s Australia exchanging Lillee and Thommo for McGrath and Lee? Marked improvement.

60s WI exchanging Sobers and Gibbs for Miandad and Imran? Even Imran would struggle on the dead wickets of the 60s, no improvement.

90s/2000s NZ exchanging Cairns and Fleming for Flintoff and Vaughn? Peak Vaughan and Flintoff a big improvement but non-peak would be probably worse

2000s SL exchanging Sanga and Murali for Crowe and Hadlee? Terrible choice - is even Hadlee going to bowl nine squillion overs and take fifty octillion wickets in SL?
