I think it’s commonly accepted by basketball fans that nba players today are much better than in like the 50s and 60s tbh. The average player today is better than in the 80s and 90s too.
Yeah, that's why the joke doesn't work with Basketball, with Cricket it's different because only braindead or stupid people think the skill-based sport was inferior before 70s or 60s so the joke works so well.

What is the worst stretch of Kohli in 8 matches?
Won’t be as big because of more innings.

Closer than I thought actually. (biggest I found)

Kohli after 84 tests 7202 @ 54.97 27 tons 22 fifties
Next 8 tests 345 @ 24.64 (still 3 fifties) (Feb 2020-Jun 2021)
Kohli after 92 tests 7547 @ 52.04 (-2.93)

It can happen to the best of them. Over the course of just six Tests in 1984, Viv's average dropped -3.28 after a run of scores which read: 15, 22*, 1, 8, 15, 10, 6, 3*, 0, 42.

After 65 Tests - 5,176 runs at 56.26
After 71 Tests - 5,298 runs at 52.98

Compton's average too, albeit it was due to a series he played with an injury, though I don't think it matters all that much considering Hammond's post war performances also came in poor health at age of 43 I think.

After 34 Tests - 3,094 runs at 61.88
After 41 Tests - 3,240 runs at 53.11

Neil Harvey went through something similar (though not quite as extreme as Compton) on the 1956 tour of England as I recall, his average dropping from something like 61 to 56 over the five Tests.

tbf, those differences are vastly magnified with a smaller sample size and higher initial average.

For example Bradman in the final 3 tests in the 46/47 Ashes (-4.37)

39 tests 5514 @ 102.11
42 tests 5773 @ 97.84

>scores a 50 in 3 consecutive matches
>average drops by almost 5 points

Thats how good the Don was.
