ICC solution to maintaining both T20Is & ODIs within the cricketing calendar

I'd probably prefer either T20s or ODIs to be scrapped entirely outside of ICC events, but assuming the ICC persist on both forms being maintained on the international calendar, what about the idea of exclusive 12 month cycles/periods for each?

Example: Once the CT is finished the ICC sanction against any ODIs being played between now & the T20I WC in March 2026 ie. so T20Is only. Then once concluded a sanction against T20Is played before the ODI WC in 2027 & rinse and repeat

This would add more meaning to each series with an ICC event approaching making each format more relevant for that given period & would also allow players/teams to focus on only 2 formats (including Tests) each year.

The obvious flaw is that there isn't always a perfect 12 months between each ICC event so there would need to be some nuance around the scheduling rules some years.

In theory this should also create a larger window for Test cricket, although I shouldn't get delusional about the prospect of NZ getting more Tests.

Thoughts as a compromise assuming the ICC persist on both formats continuing?

All I wish they did is just eleminate all the meaningless stand alone ODI and T20I tours.

Have all Test tours tag on 3 ODI's and/or 3 T20I's and that's it (unless tournaments with more than 2 teams)

The problem with that is limited overs teams have become so different to Test teams that you're flying out different squads half the time anyway.

I know that but my point is it's better for the fans to follow the Tests and then keep up the interest for the whiteball games straight after (rather than some random ODI/T20I tour out of nowhere)

Fair point, England & Australia in particular seem to have got into some reciprocal arrangement for meaningless tours that are simply to make money. I guess that's fair enough, but who can even remember the results of these series? I'm sure I watched them all and have no idea.

surely we need a World Test Championship, a World ODI championship and a World T20 Championship and make it all league form.

Scrapping T20Is outside of World Cups will never happen, but the players would cope fine as they play plenty of T20 cricket, but scrapping non-tournament 50 over cricket would be a disaster as there’s already little enough of it as it is

Problem with this is the boards outside the big 3 need these games for financial survival. So unless the ICC is compensating them its a non starter.
