International Captain
Do you rate him as an ATG?
Whatever he saidI rated Botham as a clear ATG, I rate Kapil clearly behind him but close enough that I don't think it's a mismatch, so Yeah.
NahBotham is a top tier ATG.. Kapil was better than Botham.
There's not much in it tbh.
I just don't think one can have Botham as elite ATG (Lara/Smith/Ambrose type) while having him below Kapil, as you said, the arguments for Kapil > Botham are very much also arguments for why Botham isn't an elite ATG.There's not much in it tbh.
- Botham without his runs vs India averaged only 29, Kapil had a much more even distribution of runs vs decent opposotion.
- Botham sucked against WI with bat and ball unlike Kapil who excelled.
- Botham in the last decade of his career averaged 37(!) with the ball. Though Kapil didn't have a peak as good as Botham, he was never close to worthless like Botham was for ages.
Botham being clearly ahead of Kapil is a total myth imo.
Sunny isn't in that level, change that if you really want me to vote for GoochI just don't think one can have Botham as elite ATG (Lara/Smith/Ambrose type) while having him below Kapil, as you said, the arguments for Kapil > Botham are very much also arguments for why Botham isn't an elite ATG.
I rate Botham in the Chappell/Sunny/Lillee level due to his first 80 or so tests while Kapil on the Ponting/Dravid/Sangakkara (batting) level.

Kapil’s longevity is pretty impressive as well. I don’t think Bothams numbers would be as good if he played 130+ tests. There's not much in it tbh.
