about the same level to me, both very flawed but made the best of what they were presented and were great openers in the long termHonestly, Alaistar Cook might actually be better than Smith

If one can rate Smith ahead of Sutcliffe, don't know why he can't do that with Cook. Cook is arguably better than Smith.next is Alastair Cook > Herbert Sutcliffe
Cook > Sutcliffe > Boycottnext is Alastair Cook > Herbert Sutcliffe
Sutcliffe>>Boycott>Gooch>CookCook > Sutcliffe > Boycott
All reasonably close.
Gooch looks good, but I'm not a fan.Sutcliffe>>Boycott>Gooch>Cook
Fair. Gavaskar and Hutton are clearly the best two. After that I think it’s between Greenidge and Smith, and Boycott for third best. For me Boycott is the second best post war opener or third best if you consider Len Hutton as well
Boycott>Greenidge>Smith/Sehwag/Hayden/Cook. Greenidge is closer to Boycott than he is to Smith. And Smith is in no way clear of Cook/Hayden/Sehwag.Fair. Gavaskar and Hutton are clearly the best two. After that I think it’s between Greenidge and Smith, and Boycott for third best.
Agree that Boycott and Greenidge are closeBoycott>Greenidge>Smith/Sehwag/Hayden/Cook. Greenidge is closer to Boycott than he is to Smith. And Smith is in no way clear of Cook/Hayden/Sehwag.
If Smith is in the race of 3rd greatest opener, so is Sehwag/Hayden/Cook, think that is agreeable as well.Agree that Boycott and Greenidge are close
I rate Smith a bit higher than you but agree sehwag, hayden, and cook are closeIf Smith is in the race of 3rd greatest opener, so is Sehwag/Hayden/Cook, think that is agreeable as well.
Outstanding take!!For me, Hobbs > Sutcliffe/Hutton/Gavaskar > Boycott > Smith/Hayden/Greenidge/Sehwag/Cook
throw in Simpson somewhere there as well
I’m not used to a ranking being so well received so I must amend it.Outstanding take!!

Hobbs > Sutcliffe/Hutton/Gavaskar > Boycott > V.Richards > Smith/Hayden/Greenidge/Sehwag/Cook
To each his own....I’m not used to a ranking being so well received so I must amend it.
Hobbs > Sutcliffe/Hutton/Gavaskar > Boycott > V.Richards > Smith/Hayden/Greenidge/Sehwag/Cook
What about Hayden?Cook > Sehwag for me
Sehwag’s record in many places is dismal
