South Africa team selection

I don't believe Rob Walter should be coach, we haven't been great at white ball cricket coming into the Champions Trophy.

You can't be bad at bilaterals and not win tournaments, all that experimentation and we still couldn't trust a second spinner in these conditions while the teams that are in the final can play 3-4 spinners at a time. You can't rely on Markram as a 6th bowler he's averaging 60 with the ball since 2023 , they took ages to bring Linde back into the international set up when he was performing week in and week out for Province , we could have put more pressure on Brevis to develop his legbreaks so atleast we had more options from batsmen rather than just Markram. Did we pick a squad that gave us flexibility based on the conditions ? It looks like we just tried to copy and paste the World Cup 2023 gameplan .
Rob Walter will stay. The target when he was appointed was 2027. He has 2 x semi's and one final. He is safe.

I think the gameplan would have been different if Coetzee was fit. Or Nortje. Rabada is a fine LO bowler but he isn’t on the level of his Test self. He needs the new ball but in this lineup Ngidi has to take it. Mulder is the type of bowler who will travel in LO games if there isn’t anything in the wicket for him. It’s known. We should have had the second spinner. Shamsi has to be done because there was no faith in him.

The thing is Mulder is probably your guy at 7 for the next WC. Not Linde.
Ja, not sure we'll play two spinners in SA either. But that's assuming Kesh is still our No 1 spinner, possible that Linde is our No 1 white ball/ODI spinner by 2027. He def deserves an extended run in the side again.

We have some elephants that need to be addressed aswell ..

Marco Jansen , I love the kid I think we all rate him highly but goodness me does he go missing in these big knockout games in his career so far , I think he needs professional help because he is so far off his usual level that it's simply not normal.

2023 WC SF
First ball duck
0/35 in 4.2 overs defending 213

2024 T20 WC Final
2 off 4
1/49 in 4 overs

2025 CT SF
3 off 7
0/79 in 10 overs

I have been thinking about the game yesterday and reflecting on some of the comments we made here in the build up to this tournament. We highlighted that having Rassie and Temba in our top 3 could hurt us and I think it’s unfortunate that yesterday was that day.

If you are chasing 350+ then you usually need one of your top 3 to go big or put you ahead of the game quickly. Temba is a fine ODI batter but even his best he will go at a run a ball. He has one hundred in his career when he went at 120+. If he gets stuck it’s very difficult for him to catch up later in the way a Kane Williamson can. I’ve seen Kane get stuck as well like in their game vs India.

What I’m getting at is most of the time the lineup we have works. Or it did work because we had QDK. Maybe Rickelton can be that guy but it’s been highlighted that we need either Stubbs or Breetzke in. I think Stubbs really should be in the mix as he has more gears and he has other skills.

As a culture in SA we are conservative but I look at India and how they use their resources. They have Jadeja coming in at 8 with Patel in at 5. Is Patel really a better 5 than say a Pant? Nope. But he gives the side this floater who can bowl 10 overs. Sounds like someone we have who has been on the outs for a while…Is Pandya a better new ball bowler than Siraj? Nope. But him being able to get through 4/5 with the new ball and a couple at the back end gives India so much flexibility in their attack. It’s probably a role Mulder is best suited for in terms of his bowling in LO games.

On the pure talent of our players we will always be competitive, but I don’t think we particularly try and cover as many bases as we can. On another day Klaasen pops off and we win, but if we carry on with the conservative mindset we will have days of heartbreak like this more often than we like.

Spot on , need to learn from the teams that are in the final , they trust their all rounders and pick their side according to the conditions..

All valid points brought up, lads.

Make no mistake, in a run chase like that, we had to get ahead of the rate. Quality openers who know how to manage risk would do it. Our death bowling was a farce. Jansen failed to step up and likewise Klaasen. Not even hints from them.

But what frustrates me in our bowling as much as the batting is the conservative approach spoken of by @Bahseph .They can't seem to think on their feet when opposition batsmen take risks against us.We always seem to have no answer. Twice now we didn't attack enough with Maharaj in SFs either when opposition spinners were used in that way against us.

Big decisions need to be made because obviously looking at our individual batsmen, their records are pretty impressive. Young players coming in now, might need a bit of time.
Need to start planning more ODI cricket, even if it means playing Namibia and Zimbabwe to get more games under the belts of younger players ..

Brevis , Lhu-Handre Pretorius, Maphaka need to be ready by WC 27
