Steve Smith retires from ODI cricket

Whatever it takes!!!
Makes sense if he doesn’t intend to be there in the next WC but also doesn’t make sense because it’s Steve Smith and I’m surprised the thought of giving up any cricket crosses his mind.
I mean, he probably wants to play more T20 leagues. Playing T20 for the money and tests for the love of the game, makes sense to me.

He has said he wants to play in the T20 tourney at the Olympics. Hope he kicks on in tears for a while yet. Been a tremendous player when it mattered most for Aus. His record in KO games and on otherwise awkward decks is fantastic. Will certainly be missed

Stoinis retired from ODI last month aged 35 and now Smith also retires at 35. That makes Starc the oldest ODI player now who's also 35 so may retire soon as well?

Edit:I somehow missed that Glenn Maxwell is already 36

Definitely been a great of the game. Produced important knocks in important moments and/or tougher wickets. Best you can say about him is that the tougher the pitch/conditions were, the more valuable his wicket became. All the best to him.

I really hope this is a move based on prolonging the test career instead of pulling the pin after the Ashes. The way he is batting at the moment, he has two good years left in him

Brilliant ODI player under pressure. Thought he could've made it to 2027 in SA. I think that makes Marnus as essential pick in the Aussie ODI side now especially with his fielding and bowling.

Will Maxwell last til 2027?

What about Hazlewood, Starc, Cummins, even Zampa is 35 at that point but probably ok.

I think it's a good move, though I'm not sure who should replace him (and CA will likely make a silly choice)

I wonder if he's aiming for the 2027 Ashes, though personally I think that will end up being a bridge too far.

Also that is an incredible font choice from CA for a retirement press release. Looks more like something you put on an ESG report.
Haha I was thinking the same.

But yeah he was a good ODI player, even if not up to the lofty standards of his test batting. Good last innings to end on as well.

Not if his performance doesn't drop off. He'll be 38 by that series which is what Usman is now. How old was Tendulkar when he scored his 140 in Cape Town?

Although when you reach that age, one poor series is enough to put so much pressure on.
Ideally you want him retiring after 27/28 home summer
