In general, if you are a team with better pace bowling resources and a bit lean on middle lower order batting, you would prefer Kapil.

Current SA might take Kapil.
I don't think that you grasp that great team, even very good or well built or run teams, don't select their bowling based on batting.

Toy don't weaken the part of the game that wins you matches to grasp at a few runs at the end of the innings. No one's dropping even Walsh for Kapil.

It's not a consideration.

I think that the importance of lower order batting has been greatly exaggerated on the forum here. At no point in the history of the game has great teams relied on it to the extent that is being projected. You want your best 4 bowlers, preferably one being a spinner to cover all conditions, hopefully one or two can contribute a bit with the bat but it isn't nor can be a primary objective.

I don't know if it's because I want so much American sports, but every year everyone looks at what the best teams do, what positions they prioritize and try to do the same. That's why there's a hierarchy of positional value that starts with quarterbacks and goes the pass rushers and left tackles then receivers and corners.

The same thing rings true for cricket, but instead we go for what looks good on a spread sheet. Partially because it's easier and partially because it's what we do, we apparently love spread sheets.

I take Pat Cummins over Kapil Dev any day of the week.

Lower order batting doesn't make a team better to the point that they dominate. If it graduates to the point that it's consistently relied upon, you have a barring problem. But to fix that problem you don't weaken your bowling to do it. That's again, insanity.
But as I have shown above, Kapil is more valuable than Tendulkar. That can't be right! Where have I messed it up?

WI wasn't a normal team. You can't assume you would know how Lloyd would think if presented with the choice between a relatively weaker 4th seamer and a genuine bowling AR.

To be perfectly clear, not calling you or insinuating in any way you are a r*****, because you clearly are not, just that you tend to have more reservations for SC cricketers while you are more easily able to give allowances for context for other cricketers. We all have blindspots perhaps.
You explicitly did, and I don't appreciate it.

What allowances. Kapil is a average bowler and a substandard test bat.

And blind spot, that's passive aggressive.

So again kindly...

Lol you're hilarious. Stop being so hyper sensitive.

If I had to guess, you subconsciously see yourself as providing an antidote to what you perceive as often irrational fanboyishness by some SC fans by adding what you see as necessary qualifiers and conditions on their favorite cricketers.

Which is all good. Just own it.

The fact that Kyear can't even entertain the possibility of them being in the same tiers baffles me.
What really baffles me is Kyear can say I suck upto the Indian trinity, but if someone say he overrates WI players and underrates SC ones, then all of a sudden we are calling him a ****ing racist!???

Not the first time he did something like this. I recall him saying his hero Malcolm Marshall was underrated in the 80s because the Ango establishment were racist. The same establishment that lauded Viv and Roberts as the best.

Just because he succeeded in Australia and WI, Kapil's modest away record elsewhere shouldn't be overlooked. And while his longevity was excellent and valuable, it didn't hinder his output which was never top class.

This is close.

Kapil is roundabout Gillespie level as a bowler
Yeah I'd put him maybe slightly above tbh. Gillespie was quality but definitely benefitted a ton from McGrath at the other end. He looked a different bowler when McG was missing in some big series. Kapil could very easily have replaced Gillespie and obviously Lee and made Australia an even stronger team than they were.
