This is something that I don't understand and would love to have explained to me.

Everyone shits on Punter and (especially) Hayden, basically they only came good when the good bowlers left and the pitches flattened out.

Haydos opened and Punter came in at 3 and get no respect. But Gilchrist hit his peak (in a shorter career) during the same period, while batting at 7 behind the strongest batting line up of all time and he gets none of the same criticism.

Somehow Ponting is a fraud, but Gilchrist is the 3rd name on an AT sheet. Sure.......
You don't understand that Gilchrist doesn't makes the team for his batting but that combined with the fact that he was a Great keeper???

Well Gilchrist's inclusion is simply a resultant of him being the only one in history to be a ATVG bat while also being a great keeper proven to both an ATG pacer and a spinner, and is the perfect #7 wicket keeper, the only spot where realistically a WK can make the All Time XI.

I don't think anyone thinks Gilchrist is a great Batsmen, I doubt he'd beat someone like Kohli in a batting poll even.
I'm not questioning Gilchrist's place in an AT XI, he's literally one of only two realistic options and has the batting edge.

But that doesn't take away from the fact that he escapes the criticism that Ponting and Hayden receives, while having it much easier.

And the specific reference I made was that he was the 3rd name on the team sheet, where I've seen multiple published arguments for Knott and again, he isn't labelled as a 2000's bully on a strong team like the others that actually set the platform that he thrived on.

I’ve definitely been guilty of underrating Ponting due to the era thing in the past. He would have been an ATG in any era. One of the greatest players of pace of all time.

I don’t think Gilchrist is really rated that highly as a batsman alone tbh. He wouldn’t make CW’s top 50.

Punter, as I've said multiple times in the past, was on such a tear at one point, that he was being seen as a threat to finish his career as possibly the best after Bradman.

And it wasn't just the runs he was scoring, it was how.

And I do rate Gilly as a top 5 all rounder of all time and only one of two wk batsmen whom I would rate fully ATG.

That's not remotely what I said.

It's ridiculous to beat down Punter (which you routinely do) while hyping up Gilchrist who came in 4 spots later in the same lineup with a much easier role.
Gilchrist only gets hyped compared to other keeper batsmen. Which he should.

If other top middle order batsmen were averaging low-mid 40’s Ponting would too.

A great batsman who is also a good wicket keeper at number 7? Who is the other guy?
Allan Knott 👀

Who else can it be?

Gilchrist is the better batsman, Knott is an ATG keeper though and a tier above Gilchrist with the gloves.

Knott
Gilchrist

Don't care about the rest (Dujon and Watling might be good shouts. I rate Dhoni pretty highly too, but not sure if he's top 5)
In terms of top flight full time keepers, they're just those two.

But as a pure keeper, Healy was so very special. Gilchrist was very good, Healy was ATG special.
