Hutton kind of just has a McGrath/Marshall tier flawless record so I have him quite high
You have Viv and Sachin ahead of Chappell and Hammond but both aren't in your test xi?

Don't really think Wally with his 37 Average in England Ashes should be higher than Gavaskar
Sunny was probably the 5th best batsman of the 70's.

Not much higher in the 80's.

Hammond was briefly the best batsman in the world and for the remainder the 2nd best bat behind the incomparable Bradman.

Historical context matters, or that's only for Grace and Hobbs?

Averages 19 in Australia when Lillee, Hogg or Alderman plays.

Decent enough in WI and great in England and Pakistan.

Averages 30 in new Zealand when Hadlee plays.
That's the problem with just reading of averages really. Gavaskar played Lillee in one 3 match series, scored a vital 70 in the 3rd game letting India to comeback and win. Overall, was a poor series, but not significant enough personally. In his first series he scored 3 centuries vs Thomson and in his last Australian attack read on paper: Bruce Reid, Craig McDermott and Merv Hughes; I will rate the 1st 2 over Aldermann and all 3 over Hogg.

What is this filter? So the tours where he faced Thomson or Reid, McDermott dont count?
They do, but you wouldn't put someone who performed against Lillee, Hogg and Alderman below the one who performed against Reid and Thomson. Boycott averages 58 in Australia when Lillee plays and averages above 40 against the quartet too.

Gavaskar played Lillee in 1 series only. Hogg and Alderman are nothing special, there is not much reason to rate runs against them but not Thomson, Reid, McDermott and Hughes.

That's only for Grace and Hobbs (and Trumper).
Btw That's arguably true for Richards as well yk?? He arguably was behind Chappell and Bpycott in the 70s (16th highest scorer that decade) and behind a bunch like Border, Miandad, Crowe, etc. in the 80s as well. So how come he's better than Trumper, the best batsman of the 1910s????

Root is the best batsman of 2020s, put him above all these guys as well
