Greatest English Cricketer since 1970? Botham has had a very good run recently, probably wouldn't have been close a year or so ago.

Root batting in the last 4-5 years is like one of the biggest carryjobs in modern day tests.

There second best batter averages 32 away from home and that's also because of SA where they barely play any tests.

Botham was absolutely terrific in the first 6 or 7 years, but fell off very quickly. I think he averaged 40+ with the bat and 22 with the ball till 82/83.

Botham from 78-84 >> any post 1960 English cricketer (barring peak Flintoff maybe?) but Root was on a goat level for longer.
