Lara started the 90s better, but by the end Sachin was clearly the superior ODI batsman. Sachin batted much faster, went big (100+) more, had more iconic innings etc.

1990-1998 : 131 inn. 5535 runs @ 47. 12 tons
1999-2007 : 147 inn. 4484 runs @ 34. 7 tons

Where's Strike Rate?

I think till 1998 Lara was the best ODI batsman. Sachin took over by the end of that year and did not look back till 2011.

Yeah there is no way Lara was a better batter in that time while striking 7.5 points slower.

Though Lara probably started out better.

Lara's numbers are easily better than Ponting's.
Had they played in the same period,Lara's Avg and SR will be 4-5 points higher than Pointing.

If Ponting is 42 at 80
Lara deserves 44 at 85.

Also, Lara @ 3 = Sachin / Viv.
Lara @ 1-3 = AB > Kohli
Playing outside his favorite positions ruined his stats.

Lara in top 3: 6,613 @ 46, 82 strike rate with 17 hundreds in 158 innings.

Lara anywhere else: 3,792 @ 33.55, 75 strike rate with 2 hundreds in 131 innings

so he was one of the best ODI players ever until he was asked to go down the order.

Maybe you can make an argument for Kallis with his AR ability but I'd rather go for Lara along with 2 part timers like Yuvi and Maxwell to bowl the 10 overs than Kallis.

Kallis might not even get picked in all the ODI teams from 2019 WC, Lara would be the first name on the sheet for almost any ODI team ever.
