4th Match - Australia v England

Pothas

The 5th bowler wasn’t the issue though. The 3 seamers have been too expensive.
Of course but Carse wouldn't have had to bowl so many would he. It obviously isn't the only issue but this attack isn't anything like good enough to get away with 4 main bowlers.

They got out trying to accelerate though. What's a better start than 200-2(30)? The problem is that Brook and Livingstone suck along with the pacers.
Root wasn’t smacking the ball to all parts, but given how we stalled when he got out, if he stays in we probably get that 380 tbf. Still might not have been enough mind you!

Agree but I think Duckett and Root were playing a bit slow during the middle overs. Also can't help but feel Buttler is wasted at no.6. Don't know what Mccullum is thinking by playing (on form), your best ODI batter lower down the order.

This Bazball era in both red and white ball cricket has been all hype but yielded mediocre results.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Absolute hubris from both teams in this match. It's turned into a cracker when it had no right to be, really. I feel like Australia has the excuse of not having two of their first choice seamers who are more than handy with the bat, so they kind of get a pass as Maxwell could be considered a genuine 5th option, whereas England's XI composition is just diabolical. No way on earth are Root and Livingstone a good combo as the 5th option, and can only assume they were banking on winning the toss and bowling then backing themselves to chase it down. Australia were wobbling early on and had England had another slow bowler to complement Rashid they probably could've turned the screws, even if that bowler didn't take wickets, but got the RRR out of Australia's reach to increase scoreboard pressure. Both sides haven't really learnt from the Tri-Series that literally just concluded on the same pitches that that 3 specialist seamers are useless. But full credit to Australia for hanging on and driving it home. Outrageous win, you love to see it.
In saying this, it was maybe poor captaincy not to bowl out Livingstone and Root sooner as they at least were going cheaper than the seamers, but they weren't threatening the batsmen in any meaningful way - which is where a 2nd genuine spinner would've been handy.

Buttler is such a weak captain, still looks happy and saying it was a terrific game despite his bowlers bowling appallingly to lose defending a total of 351.

He should be ropeable, Eoin Morgan wouldn't have put up with that sort of performance when he was England's ODI captain and he isn't even English.

Whatever it takes!!!
That was some serious chase there by Aus. I remember posting that 350 chase may not be that tough in these conditions simply because of how loaded the game is towards the side chasing in Pakistan especially. England not grooming a 2nd spinner has shot them in the foot again. But I guess they maybe thinking this is the make up for the conditions they may face in RSA 2 years from now.

Australia needs to be studied ..
This self belief that they are never out of a contest , to rise up and conquer any team and situation even when they aren't at their best is unbelievable..

Highest run chase in ICC tournaments.

Baz is obsessed with raw pace (or rather the idea of it, Atkinson and Carse are hardly express, even if Carse possibly wasn’t fully fit today). Putting aside Dawson who seems to have burned his bridges with the current set-up, I don’t get why we don’t give Ahmed a whirl

What better way to prepare for a tournament in two years than to pick Mark Wood! If that is the way they’re thinking, it’s madness as this may well be Rashid’s final tournament, certainly in 50 over cricket, we need to groom a new spinner, imagine if he breaks down in the middle of a game and Livingstone becomes our main spinner…
