When questions along these lines have been asked in the past, I have always answered ‘No’, whichever country it was asked about.

I have answered ‘Yes’ on this occasion though as England is one of the only (three?) countries where test cricket is still sufficiently popular for it to be played profitably and at its former volume. As things stand, cricket can ill afford one of the big 3 to weaken and for interest there in test cricket to decline.

Yeah, this is my point. England could be (and were!) shite in the 90s and beyond, but interest in Test cricket was global. There were cycles of who was the best team (Windies, Australia, India in their own conditions, Pakistan had their moments, Sri Lanka won a World Cup too, NZ 'punched above their weight *sigh* and so on) but that just isn't the case now. If England started to tank and poured all their interest in the Hundred and playing silly giggle cricket, we'd be in a worse state.

My initial reaction as well. But then again India have looked awful, NZ just lost to England and SA haven’t played most of the good teams so it’s a bit of a toss up tbh.

I’d probably give it to SA just because they’re in the finals and haven’t had any embarrassing defeats unlike the other teams.

And they beat India 3 zip away. Same England were humiliated in India 4 to 1 not that long ago
it's like Rock paper scissor, New Zealand beat India, England beat New Zealand, India beat England. Fundamentally about the same level.

Exactly

We have a cluster of teams at the moment who beat each other randomly so the prudent thing to do is pick the best looking team with best players and balance. NZ has a nice team at the moment and England have Pope and Crawley lol

Australia couldn't beat W Indies, unlike pretty much everybody else.

There is no dominant team at the mo, Australia are probably the best, but you wouldn't put your mortgage on them in any given Test like you would some of the previous Number 1's.

England's last tour to West Indies in 2022. Series result WI won 1 - 0 bwhahahaha. Get something right for once ffs

By previous number ones you mean Aus in the mid 00s and South Africa there after, sure. Present Australia are a better side than any other number one side

eh that was one freak Test match. They smashed them the one previous, and the 2 the previous year. Not quite the same thing as India losing 3-0 to NZ for example. If Aus and WI hypothetically play 50 Tests right now Aus win 49 of them
