I think SL should have moved on from Mathews by now. Has been average in tests for a long time. It's not as though they are lacking senior players elsewhere in the team or prolific domestic batsmen.

Since his Headingley masterclass, which came in 2014, he doesn't have a single winning century against the top 6 teams in test cricket. In their brief test careers, even youngsters like Kamindu and Nissanka had one each thus far. Actually, Chandimal has outperformed Mathews as a test batsman (impact-wise) since Sangakkara's retirement.
He is just padding stats these days.

Averages 34 in tests v Australia, India, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan and West Indies since October 2015. It has been around 34 throughout that time frame too. It's not as though those numbers have collapsed in the last few years.

Unbeaten hundreds on some dull pitches v Bangladesh, Ireland, Zimbabwe and Afghanistan have propped his numbers up. I like Angelo. Great servant to cricket and 8000 Test runs is an accomplishment regardless but Sri Lanka should have moved on a while back.

Yeah, I totally agree with you. Chandimal is a better test batter than Mathews imo.
