During the 2000 Olympics the then Mrs Burgey and I went into circular quay to a live site in order to watch the 1500 metres freestyle final. There were people everywhere and she asked me not to run off and say hi to people who I might know who we saw, as I was prone to doing. I told her I wouldn’t do that to her in such a crowded space, then immediately looked up and saw Evander Holyfield about 30 yards away through the crowd, standing out in a bright orange suit.

So naturally I ran over as fast as I could, left her posted and introduced myself. Seemed a lovely bloke.

I had also met Muhammad Ali a couple of weeks earlier at a mid week meeting at Rosehill racecourse the Wednesday before the Games started, where he was doing a corporate event in a function room for one of the Pratt brothers with whom he was good mates. He didn’t say much but I could tell he was deeply honoured to meet me.

There was a wizened old punter in the betting ring, and after Ali walked past with a massive entourage, the old bloke goes “excuse me young fella, was that Cassius Clay?” I told him it used to be. He stood there silently for a good 15 seconds and just shook his head then said “**** me, Cassius Clay at a midweek at Rosehill. Don’t usually get much of a crowd here.”
