Also sealed a game in 2019 by ripping through England, something I am sure Ashwin dreamed about but never did.

So Lyon holds more importance in Eng than aswin.

You miss the point. Even the straightforward tasks of sealing a game by running through a side with conditions in your favor proved beyond Ashwins capabilities.

averaging less than 30 as a mainline bowler of a major cricketting team has also proved well beyond the capabilities of Lyon.

It would have been an issue in any era, but under Kohli I noticed that Indians were not simply playing best spinner in all matches. Many times Indians went with all pacers. Some time an spin all rounders with batting being main factor to strengthten their batting where Jadeja took the spot.

In most earlier era, India would have played the best spinner without considering other factors. Most teams have played like that even in current era inclujding Aus. Aus always played Lyon. No matter if he was not very effective in Asia, he still played all games. Zero competition for a lone spinner spot and Aus mostly played 1 spinner always. India had lots fo competition for spinner spot.


Some one is saying he adapted to Asian conditions, that's not true at all. If you are averaging 30 in Asia when Ashwin/Jadeja wre averaging 20 then it shows that you are not going to win games for your team. That's what happened. Aus did not win any series. Lyon wasn't good enough to raise his game in spin friendly conditions. He has learned to bowl certain way in Aus and I think his style works best in Aus for him. I can imagine Aus winning series in India if Ashwin was playing for Aus.

Look at how Lyon was outbowled by Ashwin and Jadeja both in the last 7-8 years when they played togther. With competiion, Lyon wouldn't have played as many games he played. He kept playing no matter how he performed due to zero competition.
