The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

I mean, I already said Pakistan was the worst. I just pointed out the hypocrisy of clean umpiring by the Aussies, WIndies and co
Truth be told, all teams had home bias. It was Imran Khan who most championed neutral umpires and history should not be rewritten. WI certainly had some iffy umpiring, NZ famously so - others were not immune either. All told, neutral umpires are the best thing to happen to cricket.

I find this take amazing, almost like re-writing history. In the 1980's Pakistan umpiring bias was all over the news and Pakistan lost all credibility for home series games. It became a massive joke that Pak bats rarely got lbw while Pak bowlers could get them quite easily. The whole neutral umpre movement was primarily due to Pakistan umpires.
As I've said many times, it wasn't a secret, everyone was aware.

It's just some here that like to pretend that it never happened, or that it was the same everywhere.

There was never much said with regards to England tbh, and quite frankly the only example brought up here for the WI was one match vs Pakistan.

And none of them, had cricketers with such vast differences between home and away averages.

It seems the international scrutiny of Pakistan umpires not giving lbw got a bit too embarrassing around 1985. Despite never being given out lbw in 49 innings at home, Miandad's 50th and 51st innings were both lbw in Oct 1985.

Between 1976 and 1985, Miandad at home had 33 tests, 48 innings, averaging 77.48, with 0 lbw (so no lbw in 9 years at home)

From Oct 1985, Miandad at home had 27 tests, 38 innings, averaging 44.83, with 8 lbw (21.1%). This is very similar to his away record where he was lbw 25 times in 103 innings (24.3%) averaging 45.80

Home XI

Hayden
Warner
Bradman*
Smith
Ponting
Miller
Gilchrist+
Cummins
Warne
Lillee
McGrath

Away XI

Simpson
Ponsford
Bradman*
Smith
Border
Waugh
Gilchrist+
Davidson
Lindwall
O’Reilly
McGrath

Few close calls and some I made personal decisions on to ensure variety.

Bradman, Gilchrist and McGrath were all obvious selections for both teams. Openers for both pretty much select themselves (shoutouts to Usman and Morris tho). Chappell or Miller could have got #6 for the home team but I went with Miller cos I don’t pick him in Aussie XIs and his record is 40/20 at home. Similarly #4 in the away side could be Smith or Chappell but well Smith has those two iconic away series and iirc Chappell may have skipped a tour or two. Davidson or Lindwall could easily go ahead of Lillee in the home team but wanted variety compared to the away attack. Same with O’Reilly and Warne in the away team.

Might do some other countries later.

Warne should be away. If O'Reilly is there I would rather swap them. Also don't think Chappell should be close to away. Waugh definitely ahead.

So Jadeja makes both the home and away xi, but might not make the overall Xi, which is just fascinating. Also, I might not pick Kohli for the home xi, what about Azharuddin? Or maybe even VVS

Considered both (as well Viswanath) but Kohli do have a much better home record. Also honourable mention to Amarnath away. Re Jadeja, he makes my team easily for balance.
