England Lions Tour of Australia and England U19 Tour of South Africa

In a non FC tour match(why they can't just make them FC I will never know as they end up just glorified net sessions)

CAXI have had a Bannerman like performance from Lachlan Hearne at stumps he's 106* from 62 balls, with his side 176/9.

This is in response to England Lions all out effort of 223 after they won toss and chose to bat.

CAXI vs LIONS Cricket Scorecard, Tour match at Brisbane, January 14 - 17, 2025

England U19 vs WP U19 was a no result

WP chose to bat and made 243/6 from 45.2 before the rain came.

It was actually WP academy team in the end so quite a few older players but none with FC experience. The Curran's cousin (Kai) being one.

Pity about the weather. Hopefully that's all the rain used up ahead of the series as Dec/Jan/Feb rain in CT is rare.

Comfortable win for the CAXI side.

Mind considering England had two players half the age of an Aussie that took 6/20 wickets.

Somewhat expected, when lot of the Aussies been playing Shield Cricket.

A good workout to start their tour. Albeit only Davies and McKinney came away with any credit with the bat.

Davies seems to have been rewarded for weight of runs/experience as he was the only batsman over the age of 21!

I assume the squad has been put together mainly due to who's not playing franchise cricket. Given the number of tournaments in play at the moment, anyone vaguely near the national setup is unavailable.

I think it's better to look at the age of players they have.

I'm not sure who I'd have selected that they haven't. Below is everyone in T20 tournaments this month from England.

Matty Hurst probably the only one from a red ball perspective I think missing.

Especially when Bashir getting a chance to bowl in Aus prior to the Ashes. Puts him ahead of any other spinner they could have selected instead.

Were these T20 contracts arranged after before or after the Lions squad was announced, though?

I can definitely think of a few players who should have been on the Lions tour and aren't. Assuming they're fit I think Emilio Gay, Matt Fisher and Tom Haines should have gone for example.

Gay despite signing for Durham I don't think is guaranteed a place as the man in the Lions will be opening alongside the captain Lees.

Him and Rhodes will be battling out for the number 3 slot.

Sam Cook bowled well and was probably underbowled too. Strange he’s not at T20 stuff as he usually gets signed. Maybe he’s still prioritising trying to get an England cap.

Haines should definitely be on the selectors' radar. Josh Bohannon still has an excellent FC record. Tom Prest has potential. Jack Carson should be rivalling for Bashir's spot. Heck, I'd even like to see Bess come back into form. Ben Coad is the English Bumrah. Jamie Porter consistently brilliant, of course. I'd rather have these guys in Australia over some random u19-ers.

If any of you guys want to catch some U19 action at work. By all accounts spin should play a role & you guys have 3 with FC experience.

Thanks for this, will dip in and out of it seeing as Crapinfo aren't covering it.

Vaughan, Ahmed, Ali, Moore, Minto look to be 'The talents'. Any others close to those?
Hard to know as the others haven't played County yet, although I notice that Sawant has racked up some big runs for Middlesex 2's so could be one to watch too.

This looks like it's ending quite quickly.

The Lions has 3 guys still eligible for the U19s in Freddie McCann(19), Hamza Shaikh(18) and Rocky Flintoff(16).

Ben McKinney who only turned 20 in October too is another talented player in the Lions.

Luc Benkenstein(dales son was a talent for the U19s too not long 20 himself. Thomas Rew who's in the side for the U19 supposed to be as good as his brother James(only 21 himself).

Glad to hear James Minto has looked good again. He definitely showed his talent for Durham last season in the chances he got.

He bowled like he was far more experienced than the 16 years of age he was.

I'm definitely excited for England future as most of the people we've talked about here have already played plenty of FC cricket. So the sky is the limit for them, at such young ages.

I don't think during my time watching cricket there has been such a swathe of young talent making their mark in County Cricket.

You could pretty much get a side out of under 21 players. Albeit balance wrong with only 2 seamers and 4 spinners!

Eddie Jack another seamer at 19 I forgot to mention perhaps instead of Ali

Vaughan
McKinney
McCann
Shaikh
Benkenstein
Flintoff
Rew
Minto
Moore
Ahmed
Ali

Pat Brown with 5/21 and Cook 2/31 the pick of the bowlers as they dismiss CAXI for 214.

Doesn't look the best of returns for Tongue and Bashir as the only previous test apperances in the squad.

Lions 64/1 at Stumps with McKinney dismissed for a fluent 32.
