Amla love has increased only recently. Brilliant player.
Yeah, people forgot Amla was the premier Batsmen of South Africa and arguably the world for half a decade, ahead of Kallis and De Villiers, imo if his loss of hand eye coordination hadn't coincided with South African and Indian pitches becoming minefields he may average 50+

Atleast I don't have Gooch>Greenidge.....
Better record v quality attacks and their RPI is the same despite Gooch facing stronger bowling across their careers for an immeasurably weaker side.

You could argue Greenidge had less access to RPI due to his team having small run chases much more frequently but their career averages&hundreds are basically the same too.

The downside to this argument, Greenidge got to chase down 80-90 run totals when the other side had mentally given up more frequently, thus making 40* or 50* and amping his average.

The primary argument against Gooch will always be that he averaged below 40 for a long time but that was largely down to one opponent. What if Greenidge constantly played Pakistan and didn't get much better against them? He averages less v them than Gooch v Australia, but it has less impact on his career average because Gooch played against his least favourite opponent more frequently.

Hashim Amla edges for me.

More test runs, more all round batter.

Sehwag also world class but Amla due to his knocks in India, Australia and England.

not to mention, Greenidge himself was a player of patches, 76-78 he was a beast, and then from 79-82 he was average, and then again a great patch from 83-85 he had a great patch and then he was average from 86-91 so it's not like Greenidge gets a consistency edge. Greenidge also averages even less than Gooch in even Australia.

Yeah. Gooch's inconsistency is just easier to detect on the surface. Natural for both men as opening in some tricky conditions is a volatile game.

I think it's taking analysis by checklist a bit too far.....
