Kallis played ODIs till July 2014, so he wasn't actually retired from international cricket. He only retired from Tests in 2013.

He did have a low avg vs Aus at home so better to retire before playing them, with career average still looking pretty. Retiring to keep your stats intact is whats selfish, alright, rather than playing on and potentially screwing your stats. You have got it all mixed up.

Yes he played till 38 which is the saving grace but I don't see top players (who are still performing well enough) retiring from tests only, right before the no.1 series for their country.
that’s your mental gymnastics.

Since readmission South Africa hadn't won a single series at home vs Australia. Not even once-

93/94 Drawn
96/97 Australia
01/02 Australia
05/06 Australia
08/09 Australia
11/12 Drawn

13/14 Australia (again)

Any other top cricketer would've been pumped to rectify this home record and finally beat Australia! It's not like he'd even called time on his international career.
Honestly CW posters may not agree but if there is a top drawer series just around the corner that will decide the no.1 title of the world and you are a key player in the side, I struggle to think of a champion player that would just retire like that.

Posters will argue he can retire whenever he likes but sorry if I was Smith I would have begged him to stay.

Nah Ponting is clearly ahead of them for me.

Sanga/Kallis/Dravid are a category.
Ponting/Sanga/Kallis are definitely in the same tier for me, although I'd go for Ponting. But they are definitely close.

Their ranking in my list:-
Ponting- 15
Kallis- 17
Sangakkara- 18
Dravid- 20 (or maybe 21 if I rate Barrington ahead of him)

You mean like Ashwin?

Or like Chappell, Lillee and Marsh?

Now, Ponting/Kallis/Sangakkara are very close and any order of ranking them should be okay imo.
they're all in the same group with sachin and lara because sachin lacked killer instinct and chocked a lot of times. Remember those discussions how Dravid was more valuable for India than sachin ever was. I can't remember a series where he absolutely dominated the way lara did a few times. Lara on the other hand had godly serieses but wasn't consistent and flopped his a lot of countries.
