He retired in 2013 right before Australia were due to tour. And South Africa went on to lose the series at home. I can't imagine any champion cricketer retiring right before such a big series. Aus v SA rivalry was huge around that time.
would have been worse if he was playing to chase some random record when he knows he's done.

He scored a ton in his last game. Would have been far better than Ryan McLaren they replaced him with ended up getting roughed up by Johnson.
if he had already planned to retire by that time, he should continue to play because some random would call him out 10 years later on the internet

you just made that up
No. This was written during his supposed peak but covers the main issues well of why he wasn't as highly rated.

the only complaint is he didn't go for the kill.. neither did sachin. most of the complaints that are levelled at kallis were levelled at sachin.

Yeah massive let down from Kallis. They needed him. Instead you had a piss poor McLaren being pulverized by Johnson. Smith at least retired after the Aus series.
What a joke.

He had not planned to retire beforehand. He was already playing a 2 test series vs India and suddenly announced his retirement. Disappeared ahead of the top of the table marquee series vs Australia. Played a part in SA losing another home series to Australia.

ABDV/Smith all retired vs Australia. They made sure they got the toughest opponent out of the away before SA blooded newcomers. ABDV especially pushed himself to play against both India and Australia in the summer of 2017/18 (even though he was semi retired). He helped SA win both series.

How do you know when he planned to retire? You aren’t in his inner circle to know any of that. At least he didn’t keep playing when he knows he’s done to chase useless milestones like some selfish cricketers.

you do realize Smith and AB are much younger? They were more selfish than Kallis, retiring early.

Personally I’m fine with Kallis retiring at the age of 38 after scoring around 25,000 international runs and taking around 600 international wickets

Kallis played ODIs till July 2014, so he wasn't actually retired from international cricket. He only retired from Tests in 2013.

He did have a low avg vs Aus at home so better to retire before playing them, with career average still looking pretty. Retiring to keep your stats intact is whats selfish, alright, rather than playing on and potentially screwing your stats. You have got it all mixed up.

Yes he played till 38 which is the saving grace but I don't see top players (who are still performing well enough) retiring from tests only, right before the no.1 series for their country.

Since readmission South Africa hadn't won a single series at home vs Australia. Not even once-

93/94 Drawn
96/97 Australia
01/02 Australia
05/06 Australia
08/09 Australia
11/12 Drawn

13/14 Australia (again)

Any other top cricketer would've been pumped to rectify this home record and finally beat Australia! It's not like he'd even called time on his international career.
