Good job Bethell rocked up today, wouldn't have been much of a game without him. Does he still get MOTM? Not like anyone on the winning side was that impressive.
He did yeah.

Only realistic competition was Owen. Two tidy overs, a wicket with the ball, cameo flyer with the bat, amazing fielding creating two wickets from nothing including Bethell himself. He was definitely the second biggest reason his team won behind the opposition captain.

As mentioned in the women’s ashes thread, the Sutherland family are a cumulatively Marcus Harris to Aus cricket

Definitely wasn't a good day for the family. Maybe Will watching his sister choke so badly at the death contributed to his decision to not bowl himself here.

Bethel very impressive prospect for England. He's a fine player. Australia will have a much tougher time against England in tests than they did India who had hopeless batters.

It might be peak halba to overrate a guy who has literally never scored a professional hundred because he played well in the most recent game.

Kind of agree. There's no doubting he's a talent and he surprised me with how correct his technique is in Test Cricket, but until he shows some kind of consistency he's hardly a big threat in an Ashes series. At this stage, he's no better than 50/50 to even start a Test.

Can definitely see why England took a punt on him at No.3 in the NZ Test series, despite him never having batted there nor having a particularly good record. He has a pretty solid technique, and looks reasonably unflappable.

Also looks set to become another cab off the rank of being a left-arm 'drunk uncle' bowlers - nude and unthreatening. It's the new trend to try to push through guys who can bat and bowl 'uncles', like Bethall, Cooper Connelly, NZ tried to make Rachin into a bonafide one and left out a genuine spinner who took 10-for in the previous innings etc.

Be extremely harsh on Annabel - had a bad game today but without her the form of the Aus women's team would be looking close to catastrophic rather than merely somewhat concerning.
Yeah but it's a cumulative family thing, and tbh she'd need to be SF Barnes and Bradman combined to outweigh the shitbaggery of just the old man.

yep strange. Bethell averages 52 in tests(just the NZ series, off 3 tests) - but FC only 29. so that means he will be found out by the likes of Boland, Hazlewood, Cummins or Starc in the Ashes most likely.

Hes an excellent T20 player though- T20I he is 58 average(off a few innings).

He probably will get found out but that's four world class players before you mention Nathan Lyon who is as well and bowls magnificently to LHers. I reckon he'll have a solid career, he showed admirable game in NZ.

I think a lot of English posters said he may not play the Ashes anyway, given the incumbent wk is Jamie Smith and Pope may go back to 3
