I don’t think you appreciate how bad Aus was in the mid-80s. Then just when they started to get good, his already pretty ordinary record fell away pretty badly.

I remember when he got dropped for the WACA test of the 91/92 series vs India. Border cracked the shits massively and stayed behind to give a spray to the selectors in person for dropping him. Can’t have been great for his replacement, Wayne Phillips (the Victorian one, so kind of doesn’t matter, but still).

he was the longest serving VC under Border. Every vice captain he had got dropped at some point.

He was probably an average player in an average team in what was an average era for Australian cricket.
