iirc before Bradman obviously demolished 1930 and Jackson’s health issues worsened it was by far the prevailing opinion. @peterhrt may be able to shed further light on that.

Lillee in Asia: 4 matches 6 @ 68.33
Walsh in Asia: 17 matches 77 @ 20.53

Walsh also played for 16 and a half years and played 93% of his possible tests, along with having his peak late in that long long career.

You’ve convinced me tbh. Walsh bandwagon.
I mean, pre 1930 it would hardly be wrong to not rate Don super highly. His first two years were pretty great but mild by his standards.

Walsh did struggled in Australia though.

Well Bradman had already broken the record for the highest score then, amongst other things. Before the Ashes:

Bradman 29 matches 3692 @ 90.05 14 tons 10 fifties
Jackson 35 matches 2784 @ 54.59 9 tons 11 fifties

Oh yeah, that 450 one. I think many people just weren't swayed by Bradman because he scored like a machine. Can't think of any other reason behind 15 of 16 of his and Trumper's contemporaries going with Victor (love him by the way, an absolutely perfect human as well)

Jackson was indeed renowned for elegant style as much as anything else, unlike Bradman.

A writer, comparing the two after Jackson's Test début, stated that Bradman had "forced his way to the top by sheer natural ability, a straight bat, cool cheerful temperament, determination and enterprise", but Jackson was "the finished batsman, the batsman who knows one stroke for each ball ... executes that stroke with an artistry that has no parallel to this day". Before the 1930 tour of England, experts such as Frank Woolley, Percy Fender and Maurice Tate rated Jackson as more likely to succeed in English conditions; Bradman was seen as too unorthodox or even cross-batted for softer English wickets.

I love how much people downplayed Bradman and he just ****ing scored so much that they look idiotic now.....

Was Hill anti-Barnes?

I read somewhere that Hill said, "Barnes just bowls magic balls".
No, I meant Trumper was the opposite of Barnes.

Read an extract from a piece by Maclaren; the English boat was rocking uncontrollably in the Tasmanian waters and everyone on boat was scared shitless. Maclaren wrote the only thing he found solace in was the fact if they die Barnes dies too......

Yeah I guess I heard that in this video, at 12:29.
