Hutton's numbers are skewered by

1. the 1948 Ashes where frankly Australia had an insane batting

2. The 1938 Ashes where frankly England batted insanely well

I think Hutton is a clear step above, for his greater consistency and adaptability over his career. But I do think it's close. Ponting's overall career stats may not make him seem he belongs in a certain tier of ATGs, but I think he always enters the conversation because of how devastating and dominant he was at his peak.

Maybe he's the Waqar Younis of modern Test batsmen.
