**Official** 4th Test at Melbourne, 26-30 Dec 2024

Given Marsh isn't contributing with bat or ball would anyone be ok with him being replaced by Abbott for Sydney?
2-1 up going into the last Test and the bowling performing better than the batting means I'd be happier with any mediocre Shield batsman than another bowler. It just doesn't make any sense tactically.

But Marsh is so useless at the moment but it's probably still an upgrade.

"Umpires who intuitively understand the game" is how we got decades of hacks who didn't bother trying to apply the LBW law as written being celebrated as the height of umpiring.
I wonder how many LBWs due to batters leaving the ball are/were not actually hitting the stumps? I always feel the ump just gives it out due to the lack of shot.

I will say that if Jhye has to come in for Starc (or Starc plays half-crocked) that I might prefer Edwards to Webster now. But Webster's been in the squad the whole time so if the change should be straight forward.

I posted that infamous Blewett LBW a few weeks back where it hit him a foot outside off and was turning away and Ian Chappell was all "well, he didn't play a shot, so it's a good decision" as if the ball having to go on to hit the stumps - or, like, be vaguely near the stumps - became an afterthought if the batsman didn't play a shot. So that kind of thinking was truly rampant pre-DRS.

That's true but I'm worried about workload with a 3 day turnaround. If we go in with 4 bowlers (Marsh being a passenger) I'm a little worried about guys breaking down. Normally I'd be happy with the four main bowlers and making up the Marsh overs with Travis and Marnus but not so much now. Unless they reselected McSweeney ...

you'd probably be better off not selecting Starc given the injury cloud is over him and just pick Webster over MMarsh

Any chance you think Abbott gets picked batting eight coming in for Starc if he's not fit? I wouldn't do it but the thinking could be that it props up the batting while bringing in someone who would bowl dry, even if not as much of a wicket taking threat. It would be negative thinking but they did a similar thing at Old Trafford and it might have retained the Ashes.
