I think he is decent at interviewing players for puff pieces, just not ball by ball comments.
He did a really good interview with Valerie Adams at one stage that must have been half an hour long, and he just asked a couple of broad questions and let her do all the talking. Not sure why he feels the need to approach commentary so differently.

He has and it's all a bit of a muddle. Given how they've messed with the batting order they may as well go all in with their best batters as they see it and simply don't worry about the position. I mean, the openers are not supposed to play like openers anyway so why does it matter who opens?
I'd be tempted to give Bethell a chance but I suspect he will be the reserve next year. Think Crawley, Pope and Bashir are pencilled in for the ashes and feel all three could end up being casualties.

Ego, again. It can do bad things to a person. Sumo might come across as a decent bloke, but he was a patsy at Sky for them and the NZRU, left, then all of a sudden had a critical opinion.

And now he hogs the mike despite knowing nothing about the game. He flat out shouldn't do Tests. T20 I don't mind

Well that sounded like fun, can't wait to watch O'Rourke's spell when I get home. The ball by ball commentator on the Grauniad called O'Rourke the best young fast bowler in the world. Re his pace today, I imagine it helps that he knows this is the last true test he's likely to play for 12 months, but 95mph in the second innings of a test is ridiculous no matter the circumstances. What's particularly exciting about it is it seems so effortless. He's not like a Mark Wood where he can bowl absolute gas for 10 overs and then has to slow down, but more like a Jofra Archer where he could bowl that quick for ages so long as his rhythm is good.

Fox sports in aus have mark howard who like Stevenson didn’t play international cricket. However he doesn’t try and act like he knows what’s going on out there and has a far better knowledge of the rules , also helps that they have 3 people on at once so at least there’s still some expertise
I saw footage of Howard going off in the commentary box recently when Starc got Jaiswal first ball and it sounded ****ing ridiculous. Big booming voice with dramatic pauses between each word. Benaud would be rolling in his grave.

I usually find Howie not too bad usually, but he seemed to have a moment where he thought he had to become James Brayshaw, and that's never a good idea.

This is ending in a hurry.

Anyone know what our biggest winning margin is by runs? I tried looking it up on Statsguru but it seems to be down.
