But imagine if those privileges were given to someone with actual talent.
Ha, maybe but it doesn't mean I can't feel sorry for the guy getting a rough LBW when he's short of runs. In terms of privileges there are many well off sports-mad parents out there who provide everything they can for their kids to do well. How many of those kids make it? Ultimately, unless the kid has a certain amount of talent and drive they aren't going to play top level sport.

I don't follow England that much outside of the Ashes. Crawley averaged over ~50 in the series last year so obviously has some level of ability otherwise McCullum would have ditched him?

Yeah, I get that Crawley isn't scoring runs and there's a fair reason to want to find out who's next in line...but the silver spoon BS is exactly that and he clearly has ability. The 189 in the Ashes, no English player outside of Root is capable of that. And he's 26. Baz and co will give him a lot of rope because when he's on, he's unique in his ability to crunch quality bowlers

he also has four test match centuries in 97 innings and barely averages 30. scoring a run a ball 180 once every 3 years doesn't mean he is any good. he should have been ****ed off ages ago. we all know why he is there regardless of how much it weirdly offends some people.

he is an absolute liability.

One thing that’s particularly pathetic/annoying about the normal England mantra in these situations of ‘not playing for a draw, give it a go, records are there to be broken’ etc is that if they were serious about it, why not fecking take more seriously the task of keeping the actual target down in the first place?

‘We reckon we can chase 500, but what the hell let’s just muck around in the third innings in the field and give ourselves a target of 650 instead’.
See also not playing duckett’s shot in the last 15 minutes of play and being there tomorrow to chase it down. That was diabolical. He should be killed

So you're inferring hes there because of his Dad. I doubt Baz gives a **** who his Dad is, nor is taking on favours from anyone higher up. And it doesn't offend me if you think that's why, I just disagree. I think they've just given someone too much rope. It happens. See T.Blundell and T.Southee in our side.

He does clearly have ability. Go watch the 189. He also scored a few runs in India, etc etc. And they're continuing to back him on that, to a lot of people's chagrin.

Who should be there instead?

Worst Test shot of all time. I'm calling it.

Damien Martyn lost how many years for his shot v SA? I see now it was 6. Duckett should lose 10. He can come back after his 40th birthday if he's still up to it

If we look through the winter tours, he has had a truly awful time since the first innings of the first Pakistan test with an average of 17.36 and that falls to just over 11.3 from the last 10 innings when you take that out. The talk on here is that it might be worth trying Bethell as an opener and perhaps moving Jamie Smith up to bat 3, but that's not fraught with danger it has to be said. But I really don't think you can keep on playing someone who just isn't making runs regardless of the circumstances, whoever we are up against in games to come.

That makes delightful reading...except for the god-awful "Outs". What the ****ing **** is that word? They're called wickets. Or dismissals. Outs is non-cricket garbage and whoever designed that graphic needs to be eliminated immediately.
Sounds like something from The H**dred!

For some reason the Australians spent the whole series bowling on his pads rather sticking to a line and length just outside off stump.

I think England should push to get Bethell opening in county cricket. He's better than their 2 openers
One of the problems England have, especially around top three batters, is the lack of continuity or succession work between county cricket and the national team. Warwickshire have an established top three with two long-staying old hands with good records and one youngster they've invested a lot in, so they won't want to disrupt them for a player they're rarely going to see in their shirt. I'm not sure of this works better in other countries?
