Or that 18 months ago, or two seasons ago in @thierry henry terms, England lost in very similar circumstances enforcing the follow on.

I dunno if it was clear seeing the players on TV today but it was HOT as a mother ****er at Seddon. Sending those guys into bowl again would not have been popular in the bowling group
Think my reference to 18 months ago was lost by some. Of course batting again is the right thing to do, as it was then. But golf….

It's even funnier how often it still works. Worked so well against Ajaz in England that he bowled like two overs and then got dropped for Michael Bracewell to bat eight and be the fourth bowler.
yep you need to have a gambler's brain to captain spinners effectively, it's a high variance game. I don't know if Kane can pronounce the word 'risk' without washing his hands.

Anyway this situation should be no surprise to anybody as it could easily have been the case at Christchurch or Wellington when we were on the ropes 4 down cheaply in both first innings but Brook and Pope dug us out of the hole. They failed here and look what happens...

Exactly. Some of the analysis has been like the Pakistan series or 3rd Test vs Sri Lanka never happened

It's daft but watching from the other side of the world it always comes across as balmy, breezy weather rather than boiling hot. Can't explain why 😊

Yeah, I would've picked him in all three tests tbh for exactly that reason (and because you often need a spinner to bowl into the wind at the Basin). An 8, 9, 10 of Santner, Smith and Henry is a pretty ridiculous tail as well.
I definitely wouldn't have picked him at Hagley, I just don't think you can really go into a Test there with Mitchell as your fourth seamer given how little he's shown with the ball in Tests, especially if one of them also has to be Southee (yeah yeah I know, but living in the real world).

Nz, particularly any place north of Wellington also feels much hotter than the degrees celsius due to the sun.

28 in Hamilton feels like 36 in athens. Just very hot.
Also, at least judging from the games at Seddon that I've been to, you really don't seem to get much of a breeze coming through that ground.

I'd normally agree but against England I think Santner's ODI bowling style is going to produce some chances. And yeah, talking about the the XI I'd select not what Stead would countenance, and I just think he brings more to the side than Southee.

Oh that's interesting thanks.

Think it might also be an impression because of the grounds with the grassy areas etc, it just looks like sort of chilled.

I need to visit really.

Lots of bowlers would have offered more than Southee really. Santner is one of them for sure.

If you had to pick Southee would you have still picked Santner?

Wellington just doesn't get much higher than 22, but even then, it feels a lot hotter than 22. Those are shade temperatures and the strength of the sun can be ridiculous. I had a thermometer out on the deck on Christmas Day once, in the morning, and it was in the high 30s in the sun. South Island can get baking too - I much prefer to go tramping in **** weather than on a scorching hot day when you're out in the sun and going through the water quick as a flash. On those days, it has to be bush walking - but much of the best of the South Island tramping, you're in open tussock/grassland and can bake very quickly.

It's an odd question. Like asking if you had to pick Finn Allen to open would you play an extra batsman to bolster the batting. But yes, I concede you need at least 3 wicket taking seamers at Hagley, so if you're going in with Southee you need 3 others.

I also concede that if all NZ bowlers were fit I'd probably go with a KJ, Henry, O'Rourke, Sears attack. But with the options more limited, I think there's generally more value in having a spinner.
