Eh he also has a few years out of form in the early 80’s similar to Smith’s record overr the past 3 years where he was clearly outperformed by multiple teammates but people don’t really acknowledge his mid career dip much.
Yes. There are three phases for me. The 76-81 peak(including WSC becomes even more amazing). 82-83 he has a dip, but post his eye surgery, he became the best in the world from 84-88 again(averaged round about close to 50 @an SR of 70+). Then the final dip

I wouldn’t call 84 anything special either. And of course there’s his pre 76 phase also.

wonder if Crowe and Gooch the best batters in the world before the fall of Viv (1989) and the rise of Sachin (1993)

Behind Border only. Miandad with his heavy home bashing still was not that ahead. And obviously Viv’s SR far superior
Crowe imo. Also Greenidge, Gower and Gatting were pretty equal to him, as was Miandad really (had a Great NZ tour in that period). I think Viv was among a handful of the best, but not the very best.

Include his WSC tons.
For a period of a couple years. WSC was test cricket.

To ignore it the. To say he had no production during that period is idiotic. It was the middle of his peak and he was exceptional.

The fact that some people believe that minnow bashing under a test designation was somehow more relevant is telling.
